What really makes the internet dynamic, and why is it losing that quality nowadays? This essay looks at the work of architect Christopher Alexander, who famously wrote about what gives cities life, and applies them to the internet.
As it turns out, a city and the internet derive its life from the same thing. Any futurist idea of the internet has to understand what truly makes it tick, and understanding this can help to correct the worrisome trajectory of the internet.
You could also think of the internet as an information space filled with dimensionless (yet real) information objects that have properties that are somewhat analogous to the physical properties of real objects.
Reddit itself is a pretty good example. There is time. But distance (in an information space) is meaningless.
