„The population of Japanese nationals fell by a record amount — more than 900,000 people — in 2024, official data showed, as the country battles to reverse its perennially low birth rates.“

„While many developed countries are struggling with low birth rates, the problem is particularly acute in Japan where the population has been declining for years.“

„Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the situation a „quiet emergency“, pledging family-friendly measures like more flexible working hours and free day care to try and reverse the trend.“

„Last year, the number of Japanese fell by 908,574, or 0.75 percent, to 120.65 million.“

Happen across Asia. The late stage of capitalism and real estate centralised economies.

    3. I love how companies and governments make life almost unlivable if you’re below middle manager. Then they’re shocked you dont want to follow tradition and choose to be poorer

      It’s very sad.
It looks like Japan can’t get out of this cycle

Why would people want children anyway, if it’s not strictly necessary?

Seems odd to bring more people into our dying, overpopulated world.

Excellent news. It is good that developed countries start the trend of population decrease.

    7. Its about comparison, if you see overly happy looking influencers traveling the world instead of raising kids, you start to think maybe that’s what’s happiness is all about. Replace traveling with any other hobby that takes all free time or money and you have a formula of no kids.

    8. For years I’ve heard of the work culture where you can’t leave before your boss does. Also specific worlds for, “death by work,” and “s***cide by work”.

Is this still relevant in Japan, have things got better? Do they realise having a work culture like this stops people having families?

    9. I mean there is negative wage growth among companies offering bonuses. Many people dont even get twice yearly bonuses or major benefits from their workplace. The people who have the lowest wages are the ones in prime years to have children.

It boils down to money and a one time gift of a joke of an amount isn’t going to fix it. It’s not even about work hours any more, its workplace expectations/stigmas and inflation outpacing wages. Japan could benefit from everyone saying the quiet parts out loud. Japan is slipping negatively in every metric I come across and its business as usual, no alarm bells or action being taken.

    10. Gonna blame foreigners bro, then japanese will start fucking again when the filthy gaijins are gone

      >The anti-immigrant party has falsely claimed foreigners enjoy more welfare benefits than Japanese nationals.

somehow racists – no matter the country – universally agree on that one…

Pure Japanese and Koreans will decline, and mixed blood will repopulate both nations.

    13. Three other factors contribute to the problem in Japan. First, as more young women go to college they see careers that interest them and cause them to delay pregnancy. Second, just the time spent in college, and Post graduate would work to defer child bearing. Third, They need to find a mate that they deem appropriate, and, somewhat paradoxically, dating apps can work against that.

    14. Not gona lie, Japan Has developed perfect slaves by teaching their people that boss happiness is part of their culture.

    15. It’s because of social media. Who wants to raise someone who’s only going to fall into the trap of staring at a screen for hours a day and then throw a tantrum when reasonable limits are set. If the world was like it was in the 90’s and early 2000’s when I was a child, I’d love to have kids, but “child culture” seems to suck now. There’s no joy left, just a competition. And kids staring at phones. Who wants that?
