I swear, this topic has come up organically several times at my workplace in the last couple years. It’s always “You never know with people nowadays” in reference to strangers. Or “it’s not safe on the streets anymore like when I was growing up”… we live in a small city with low crime.
Every time I casually mention “oh violent crime is way down from it’s peak in the 90’s. So is property crime” and without fail they look at me like I farted. It’s happened five times with five different people. All five acted shocked that I would disrupt their narrative with facts.
