I was looking at a condo at the beginning of the pandemic. It was literally $150,000, even. There were several more in the same building going for slightly less, because they weren’t as nice or as large. By peak market prices, those same units were literally reposted for $450,000.
This wasn’t the Toronto market, obviously, at those prices. But it goes to show that, even if prices have fallen over the last 4 years, we’re still pretty screwed.
The housing affordability taken for granted by past generations seems like it’s never a game going to be attainable for our youth and future Canadians. We need to take a hard look at why, and institute some policies at the federal and provincial level that push back against the commodification of housing.
that’s all well and good but that $651,000 doesnt include maintenance/condo fees of course which are more often than not completely nuts – and will almost certainly go up indefinitely – so it’s still completely unaffordable at the end of the day.
