      The real headline of what he said is that rent and childcare costs too much for teachers here so they want to move abroad. Just for all the people who will be outraged before reading the article.

      The statistics, if you’re interested.

      3,614 teachers on a career break 2023/2024, up from 3,153 2022/2023 and 1,715 ten years ago (2013/2014). That does seem like quite a strong increase.

      In % terms, in 2014/2015 there were 54,069 teachers in the sectors counted (all excludes ETBs) and 1,842 on a career break – 3.4%

      In 2023/2024 there were 70,755 teachers and 3,614 on a career break – 5.1%

      So proportionately there are 50% more teachers on a career break today than ten years ago.

      Seems significant and perhaps a generous term and condition of the role that needs to be looked at.

      As said in the article, the cost of living is not helping teachers.

      But also, school are massivly underfunded. The voluntary contribuation is not voluntary. Teachers are out of pocket getting supplies for classrooms.

      A friend of mine is a Primary school teacher and use to love it. Now she hates it. It stresses her out. Kids no longer have the capacity to pay attention. Bullying and racisim is rampant. Parents refusing to accept their little angle is a bully then having a go at the teacher.

      My kids former principal worked in a local school to us and said kids would come in starving and its hard to deal with it mentally. Teaching takes a massive toll on mental health now a days.

      I don’t know about Secondary school but i say depending on where the school is, so students can be aggressive.

      I know several who have done exactly this. They all want to emigrate and travel for a bit but they know the longer they leave getting a permanent job after graduating the harder it gets.

      So they get the position secured, then take a career break and fuck off to Dubai or somewhere for a few years

      Not anything new.

      Remeber a teacher in our local primary school doing it 10 years ago, went to Dubai.

      My sister in law who’s a teacher, said she’d come back with a house deposit having spent a year out there teaching.

      Even if you own your own home and are doing well for yourself, the housing and cost of living crises affect everyone sooner or later.

      As in their entitlement. Where is the news here? Teachers take advantage of career opportunities that are open to them. Just because it’s public sector people are having a go.

      I quit my job in 2011 to go travelling. I met a lot of teachers who did likewise and were planning on finishing up in Dubai. They said they had a ten year career break. That’s crazy and unfair on new hires if it’s still that length of time.

      I mean they’re perfectly entitled to it, if I was a teacher I’m sure I’d do the exact same.

      Every teacher can ask for a career break, it is up to the board of management to grant it or not.
