That’s not a surprise. How weird is it to think the generated responses of a large language model (what people are calling ‘AI’ right now) constitutes a meaningful conversation? You gotta be hella lonely

That makes complete sense and also aligns with my personal experience.
Interestingly, they find that men are more affected. From the paper: „Individuals using AI tools at least once a week for personal conversation, showed markedly poorer social disconnectedness outcomes (compared to never-users). Such associations were particularly pronounced among men and younger individuals.“
Also: „Potential explanations for the sex differences may relate to social roles and expectations, i.e. men may be more likely to avoid human dialogue, e.g. about their feelings. This could lead to substitution effects where real-life interactions are replaced by conversations with AI tools ultimately leading to greater isolation and withdrawal.“

I do this but was already extremely socially disconnected for a long time before doing so. So it’s not like AI caused the loneliness.

Hows the causality here? I would say people who feel lonely and socially isolated and live socially retracted would be a lot more prone to use AI tools for personal conversation.
