It seems like Bloomberg believes the only purpose for countries to exist and have any foreign policy is to have low tariff rate from US.

Swiss neutrality, EU bloc, India Russia relations, Brazil legal system, Canadian sovereignty – all are being question from lens of tariffs.

Such a joke. We need to stop this nonsense.

Sooner or later world will stop caring about US tariffs. It’s not the time yet but it would come. We better get used to it.

    2. Neutrality worked for Switzerland only in the old historical context that Europe was „the world“ in which Switzerland was living. The big powers in Europe had an interest to have Switzerland be neutral and also a strong incentive to protect said neutrality if one of the big powers were to attack Switzerland or try to strong arm it.

It mattered in 19th century continental Europe because giving access to the Alp passes to Germany (or Italy, or France,…) would give it an undue advantage in the geopolitics of Europe and so the other powers would clearly intervene to protect said neutrality.

This world does not exist anymore in our globalized world. The big powers do not give a rat ass about Switzerland’s neutrality because it does not matter to China wether Switzerland is aligned to another power. Neither does the USA or Russia care.

Right now it is an anachronistic romantic fantasy in this country of mine and we need to move past it. It’s going to be a tough cultural shift though. Neutrality is a core cultural value of ours.

    3. To be fair Swiss always wants the positives without the negatives. How can they say its good to be neutral? Its like saying that you dont care if you live near a democracy or a dictatorship. Which its not true. Isolation never worked.

      „Neutrality“

Turns out that now that cryptocurrency exists, there is less of a need for a country based on taking everybody’s money with no questions asked.

I wouldn’t be surprised if an unsaid part of the US-EU deal was that the US would screw over Switzerland with tariffs to make EU look better.

Neutrality always ends up de facto supporting the oppressor and aggressor…

    7. There is no such thing as a neutral country. There’s only countries that are close to enemy borders and countries surrounded by a buffer zone of allies which gives them the ability to pretend that they’re somehopw better and nobler than the rest.

The only neutral thing about Switzerland is the fact that they like to maintain their ability to launder blood money from every criminal equally and without exceptions.

If the Swiss magically exchanged place with Estonians, neutrality would go out the window in about 5 seconds.

What a weird headline (paywall sucks btw). Are we sure they understand what neutrality refers to?

    9. People seem to have forgotten the fact that Switzerland, along with Austria, is totally landlocked by the NATO. So there’s just no chance for a third country to invade them. If Russia were to invade Switzerland or Austria, they’d have to pass NATO territories, which NATO wouldn’t agree, because doing so is considered assisting the invasion. So, why bother to join NATO? Just keep a good relationship with our European neighbors is enough.

So their so called neutrality is just free riding

Brazil has a trade surplus with the US and still got hit with tariffs because Trump doesn’t like them or something. The point is that there is no logic or reason to what Trump is doing, and there is no point trying to play ball with them because it doesn’t work.

Eh, set up shop in France or Germany. Add the final screw in the watches, export.

    12. I wouldn’t read that far into it.
Swiss exports are mainly luxuries and pharmaceuticals. Pharma got an exemption so it’s mainly luxuries. Switzerland makes a lot of money selling shiny toys to US. Trump admin feels it’s too good for the Swiss and wanted something in exchange. Apparently they didn’t get it so here we are. It’s just the nature of the trades between the countries that is very beneficial for Switzerland.

I mean the problem is Trump, not the Swiss. He just want every country to lick his boots and promise stupid things
