I mean Faith and believing you already know everything is peak narcissism is it not?

Self-compassionate? Sounds like a charitable way to say selfish.

Self-compassionate? Well it’s so surprising to find out that the people I think of as being self-centered and selfish are focused on their own well-being. Got any more Earth shattering information r/science?

Uninteressting, as of yet. Twits!

Christianity incentivizes people to look inwards, Atheism incentivizes people to understand the natural world, this creates a personality difference.

>Christians also scored higher on measures of grandiose narcissism, though the differences were modest. The difference was driven primarily by one aspect of grandiose narcissism—grandiose exhibitionism—which includes tendencies to show off and seek admiration. No significant differences were found between Christians and atheists in the other two aspects of grandiose narcissism: leadership/authority and entitlement/exploitativeness.

I could imagine the reasons for self-compassion, if a priest, pastor or even a Bible passage can tell you for sure that your sins are forgiven if you confess/believe/repent, whereas for atheists or agnostics, our actions and their consequences just … exist, and cannot be undone, you can sometimes be forgiven by the people affected, but not always. And there is also the belief that humans are inherently fallen/sinful, or that the devil is tempting us, which could serve as a mitigating circumstance.

Are self- compassionate and narcissistic the same thing?

Call me cynical but this feels like an online survey being used as a marketing asset. Given the keyword stuffing in the press release probably one co-ordinated by an SEO/GEO agency

According to Wikipedia: self-compassion is extending compassion to one’s self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering.
So this makes sense. Actually explains why they have a persecution fetish

How about being just regular compassionate?

Must be nice to believe you have an omnipotent being loving you and accepting you as you are without any proof.

So they give themselves more grace? Could be good or bad but since they’re more narcissistic I’ll go with bad

So, they are more likely to rationalize their own bad behaviors. Yep, checks out

As a atheist and an engineer, I don’t believe whoever spends their good amount of time to prove such discriminatory statement either credible or competitive enough to reach truth. Before absentmindedly throwing disdainful coments based on this, think why these people work on topics on superiority/inferiority of certain Races/Religions/Gender. Not everything stated in the name of science is truth.

Probably true for people from other religions.

Ex-Catholic (born and raised) here, do they mean evangelicals? Cuz even though I left the church, „Catholic guilt“ is still a thing with me and it is SUPER annoying

They mean to say “Christians are more self compassionate AND narcissistic”. It’s written as if these traits don’t go hand in hand with each other. Narcissistic people forgive their own bad behavior but judge everyone else. Sounds pretty on brand.

„the devil made me do it,“ and, „the Lord will forgive me“ make self-compassion for narcissistic behaviour easier.

Now if we could find out what makes both the same sort of insufferable when you get to the extremes we’d really be onto something.

Yeah it’s very easy to forgive yourself when you can use any of the following and then some:
“Only god can judge me”
“Only he knows the plan”
“God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers”

I always figured this behavior stems from the belief that “god loves me and that’s all that matters so it doesn’t matter how I treat anyone else.”

Realistically you can only really look at American Christian’s in a vacuum because they are so politicised comparatively against Europe. Would be interesting to have the same discussion 10,20 and 30 years ago as I would not be surprised if that attitude has only come about recently

I had an Evangelical aunt and I still have two evangelical cousins. Biggest hypocrites ever.
My aunt and my eldest cousin, who was 15 came to my mom because a younger cousin needed a place to stay for a few months. Why? The 15 year old cousin had to grow to rehab for substances and alcohol!
I was 7.
Christians are the best argument for atheism that exists.
