I’m a bit conflicted by this, in saying that we did donate chickens to a wildlife park to feed their cheetahs.
Do they also take annoying children?
Horses are btw. also a good meat source for human consumption.

A good decision.
This is not news. The zoo has done that for many decades.
Predatory animals in the zoo can not just choose to be vegans. They need meat. Giving a horse to the zoo is basically free. Sending your „beloved“ animal to inceneration can easily cost you 3000 kr.
and no. The predators in zoo does not get to hunt and munch on live animals. They are killed and checked by vets in the zoo and also frozen for a while.

„Unwanted Pet“ feels like an oxymoron.
It is Aalborg Zoo but Odense Zoo and other zoos/animal parks also ask for it.
They have done that for years. Often they got old pets or horses (without any disease of course) from owners. A vet in the Zoo do check the pets for any disease. If there is nothing wrong with the pet and it is approved for use as food for the predators at the Zoo, the veterinarian will euthanize the pet.

Remember thats the same country only a few years back which had Animal Brothels.

How picky are they in terms of accepting your word as to where the meat came from?

**A zoo in Denmark is asking the public for donations of unwanted small pets or horses to feed its captive predators.**
„In zoos, we have a responsibility to imitate the natural food chain of the animals — in terms of both animal welfare and professional integrity,“ Aalborg Zoo said in a post on social media.
The zoo in northern Denmark said that chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs were an important part of the diet of its predators, which need „whole prey,“ reminiscent of what they would hunt in the wild.
„If you have a healthy animal that has to leave here for various reasons, feel free to donate it to us. The animals are gently euthanized by trained staff and are afterwards used as fodder. That way, nothing goes to waste — and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being for our predators,“ Aalborg Zoo said.
The zoo said it accepts donated rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., but no more than four at a time.
It also accepts horses for feeding its animals, which it says on its website are euthanized by a zookeeper and a veterinarian.
Horses to be donated for animal food must not have been treated for illness for at least a month, and are subject to size restrictions, the zoo said on its website. They must also be in a condition where it is safe for them to be transported.
Given that the horse is a donation, the donor can receive a tax deduction for its value.
„Our needs vary throughout the year, and there may be a waiting list,“ Aalborg Zoo said.
Can we feed them members of Parliament instead?
I have a very ugly and aggressive mother-in-law.

How about unwanted babies?
We have trillions of deer, geese and feral hogs here in America. Why not pick them over Fluffy? Meat gets shipped all the time, so that is not the main impediment.
Especially with small pets, it doesn’t seem economically feasible. Having a vet check over a number guinea pigs and euthanize them must be more costly than ordering a box of frozen animals in similar size. From educational point of view I get it, from an economic/commercial point of view, not so much.
Will be the first to admit I don’t know how zoos in Denmark are set up, commercially, not-for-profit or something else. I know how the Dutch zoos are set up, this wouldn’t be doable for financial reasons, unless it would be done from an enrichment budget or the likes.
