I sincerely, and genuinely, find Papa John’s pizza to be close to inedible.
I don’t know what’s wrong with it, or what they do, but I genuinely can’t stand it. I’d literally rather not eat (not starve, not eat) than go to Papa Johns
You used to be able to get a large pizza, drink, starter delivered for £14..
Lockdown went, the price hiked to £20 plus delivery at £3.99
Yeah… No.
That’s the dumbest business strategy I’ve ever seen, and I watched C&A go bump..
Used to be incredible value for money. Now you may as well just buy supermarket pizza. I think they probably need to pivot and get pizza making automated rather than employing staff. I imagine high labour costs plus increase in cost of raw materials is kicking them hard in the teeth.
Quality of the pizzas dropped, price went up and dirahea happened everytime I ate one.
Quite like Papa Johns, so a bit surprised to see Redditors have endless diahrrea with it. I think it’s better than Dominos anyway. Very expensive though, it’s not far off £30 a pizza these days so the discount isn’t really a discount at this point.
Had it once, was grim. Had to buy a new pair of pants the morning after too.
Domino’s and Papa Johns are both poor quality. Went out to Rudy’s last night in Manchester and it’s cheaper and better. I’d rather get that delivered
No surprise The quality declined and combined with better options from smaller/indy places, I’m amazed they have lasted this long. Pizza Hut must be feeling anxious, as they’re not much better.
got a Papa John’s for the first and only time in lockdown and it was so horrendously poor that it made Domino’s look like haute cuisine.
Haven’t ordered a Papa Johns in a long while – used to have one roughly every other week but if it’s anything like Dominos I can see why it’s dying.
Looked at ordering one last night and came in at £62 for 3 pizzas; after I’d waded through their dizzying myriad of “deals” I managed to get that down to £38… For 3 medium pizzas….
Ended up walking to Coop and getting the same for £9.
Used a Papa Johns in London last week and the branch was taking cash only.
At uni practically weekly me and my friends would buy one large pizza each for about 9.99, and they always had a buy one get one free offer so we essentially had 6 pizzas for less than 30 quid, since then the prices have skyrocketed and the deals seem to have stopped, they must have been hemorrhaging losses for that to happen.
American pizza chains seem to forget – in the UK at least – that shitty cheap takeaway pizza is supposed to be cheap.
Their prices are ridiculous. At least Costco food court still understand it, if you have one of those nearby it’s probably the best place to get this type of pizza.
20+ quid for a pizza, that I can get from a multitude of pizza houses at a fraction of the price. I don’t think they realise people have less money these days…
I usually go to a local independent pizza place, but as far as chains go, Dominos is much better than Papa John’s.
All this thread is showing is how little people in the UK understand the insane costs businesses have faced since the triple whammy of Covid, Brexit and the War in Ukraine.
To being with the cost of utilities for businesses has gone through the roof, in some food businesses they are now paying x3-x4 then what they paying pre war in the Ukraine.
Next comes the costs of importing stock. Everybody was warned that the costs of importing goods would increased and pasted onto the consumer.. well here we are, if you voted for Brexit, this one is on you.

Ukraine was called the breadbasket of Europe for a reason.
Ukraine was one of the biggest exporters of oil, grain and fertiliser in the Europe. Farmers and produce growers have faced massive increases in costs due to the price of fertilisers.
Since May 2021 the price of UK-produced ammonia nitrate fertiliser has gone up 152% and Imported prices by 171%
This has the knock on effect on everything that is grown in a field.. just think about that for a few moments.
I haven’t even mentioned the increases in business rates, rents, maintenance costs, wages, NI contributions etc..
Who did you think was going have to pay for all these increases that businesses are having to deal with?
Local pizza shop – £14 for a large pizza, stuffed crust and a drink. Completely outshines Papa, Pizza Hut and Dominos.
I used to love the Papa John’s at the Michael woods service station (mid way between family so frequent visits), honestly the best service station food you could get and great value.
They closed it down around COVID, about 2 years ago I happened to find myself close enough to one to get a delivery and not only were the prices high but the quality was worse then a bad dominos.

I just came back from Cost Rica and when we went to the city over there, we could get a Papa John’s massive pizza (i think 14 inch or more), and it after currency conversion was about £10.
How on earth could they possibly justify the prices they have over here, literally more than double for the same?
Absolute failure of a business strategy in the UK and utterly self inflicted.
My most recent order from papa J’s involved getting a BBQ pizza with no BBQ sauce on it. I want to be clear. The sauce goes on top must be pretty hard to miss.. I called up and got told I can get another now or call up and get another later. I opted not to waste food and went for another.
Later that week comes along and I get told by the same guy on the phone they don’t honour that agreement. I told him to take pizza box and ram it up his arse sideways.
After a chat with head office, I had a pizza arrive to my door from a very annoyed man. I opened it up and it was no joke just a tray of bbq sauce on a pizza base with some toppings thrown on.

Serves them right – their pricing is outrageous, quality on the downward spiral and you can get a better pizza for cheaper at the local kebab shop or chippie.
Perhaps awful pizza at sky high prices isn’t the winning model they’d hoped it would be.
Subway will be next. £14 for a footlong meal deal these days. I’m just not prepared to pay that.
Both Dominos and Papa Johns no longer have the same appeal given you can get a much nicer Pizza Express for the same price on Deliveroo
It is so expensive and the pizza tastes like a frozen one from the supermarket. At least it has proven that you can actually do it worse than dominos.
I swear there’s a gap in the UK market for a chain to offer nice tasting and reasonably priced delivery pizza. Pizza Hut, Papa Johns and Dominos are all abysmal, especially in comparison to decent independent places.
I’d rather buy a frozen Crosta & Mollica pizza from the supermarket for a fiver, than give any money to those lot.
One opened up near to me a few years back and was closed about a year later. It was doing worse business than the generic pizza/kebab/burger whatever else those places sell which was directly next door.
I did order a couple of times, once they got the order completely wrong so had to wait an hour for it to be redone and the second the food was just basically okay. Not surprised they’re struggling.
I could pay £20 plus for a takeaway pizza, or £3.50 for a takeaway-sized Chicago Town Pizza… I can be decadent 6 times or once, it’s an easy decision!
£20 for £1 of ingredients, not particularly surprising.
When I was a kid, Pizza Hut and Dominos were great.
Then they both became terrible, and Papa Johns was the best.
Then I discovered Vocelli’s, which is priced similarly to Papa Johns, but way better. Then Dominos improved and IMO is currently better than Papa Johns.
And little Caesars has been heroically trucking along in the niche „Hot $5 pizza sitting on a rack ready for you if you want not very good pizza for not very much money RIGHT NOW“
I like Papa Johns (and Dominos) but the prices are wild now which stopped us buying them. Pizza surely has one of the biggest markups of any food!

Like every other retailer it seems they jump on the „inflation“ news as a way to hike prices and hide behind the „well that’s inflation for ya“ and just expect people to still be able to afford what was already over priced in the first place
I went to Italy and perhaps it was just the area I was but €5 gets you a very good plain cheese €7 for some toppings.
£20 for what is bread, tomato and cheese is a rip off, it’s any wonder anyone pays it because it’s not exactly amazing pizza. Just standard average pizza
I’ve stopped buying since they got rid of the pizza I liked. I’d pay £50 for an xxl stuffed crust philly cheese steak with some of those jalapeno scroll things. Same reason I stopped with dominos, same reason I stopped mcdonald’s (no bacon bagel, no mocha wtf). If they didn’t remove the only things I like I’d spend my considerable disposable income on them.

For the quality most of the chains push out, I’m really surprised that some of them haven’t looked to corner the market for „cheap“ pizza.
Pizza is inherently a cheap food, and with the logistics of delivery now handled elsewhere someone that makes passable pizza could probably undercut both the supermarkets AND pizza delivery places by offering cheap pizza without all the fucking nonsense around „pretending“ to do offers, or having vouchers to make the price less brutal.
You can knock a pizza out in a few minutes from scratch, assuming the prep is there and done, and that you’ve got the process down. That’s what these big chains are literally known for, so it surprises me that they’ve not tried to become a „cheap slice“ place. If you could get a large pizza for £5-7, compared to the £15-20+ you’d expect from Dominos, you’d probably go for it as nothing more than a sunk cost if it tastes bad – and realistically Papa John’s would still make money off of flour, 90 seconds in an oven, water, cheese, and some toppings.
The margins on pizza have always been very high, but seemingly less so now because no one wants to pay the kind of money that these places are asking.
The bottom crust on Papa John’s is literal sawdust.

I looked at investing in them last year because they looked cheap. Arguably they still are due to their IP and customer databases but I didn’t see a way for them to turn around their performance.
The barrier to entry has lowered and many takeaways are doing the same offering for less – potentially some illegality in how they compete.
I had an unhealthy relationship with Domino’s and Papa Johns. I genuinely loved them. The second they started charging delivery I stopped cold turkey lol
I literally don’t eat out anymore in the UK used to get fish and chips once or twice a month, a papa johns pizza maybe once a month and used to eat at maybe 2 Nando’s a month. I can still afford it I just literally refuse to spend how much it costs for what you get and the quality.
It makes no sense at all if you ever go to somewhere like Poland you can go to a pizza restaurant and get 3 large proper pizzas made in a pizza oven with sides and 3 drinks for about 35 quid. God knows how much that be in the Uk.
By the way Morrisons do a 14 inch pizza for about £4.50 if you get a coke and some garlic dip your probs all in for £8 quid.
I used to order pizza, Domino’s or Papa John’s, once a month. I liked it for what it was, I have no illusion as to the quality, but it satisfied a particular itch.
But now you basically cannot spend less than £20 and you have to start doing a bunch of deal comparisons and searching for the best combination which is never exactly what I want to order (usually too much or not the sides I want).
I don’t think I’ve ordered pizza in about a year now. I’ll buy supermarket or occasionally make my own nowadays.
Price gouging on a pizza that is worse than Pizza Hut / Dominos.

You can get better pizzas, cheaper, from local places.
Same with other fast food chains. BK and Maccies are worse for the same price as some local places. Of the American burger chains now, I consider Wendys far and away the best. Actually comes hot for a start. Haven’t tried Five Guys
