Whatever. I was there during that time, in the greater social circle of many of the messy celebrities of the aughts, through friends, and I was often the only person who had absolutely zero to do with entertainment in any form (healthcare).
Zero, ZERO percent of them deserve any sympathy from the masses for how poorly they were treated by paparazzi.
The 2000s media landscape wasn’t kind but many/most young celebrities were not innocent bystanders. They leveraged fame, fueled tabloid culture, and cashed the checks that came with it. Sympathy should be reserved for those who lacked agency, not for those who willingly danced in the spotlight until it burned.
Many of these celebrities only objected to paparazzi coverage once it became unflattering. after a public breakdown, weight gain, legal trouble, or fading relevance. Sympathy feels hollow when outrage is situational.
If being photographed leaving clubs in full makeup was fine at 21, why is it suddenly abusive at 25? You can’t reap the rewards and then claim victimhood when the tide turns.
Media exposure translated directly into higher appearance fees, endorsement deals, movie roles, record sales, and magazine covers. Awful people like Lohan, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Kim Kardashian built entire brands around being constantly photographed, even if it meant manufacturing drama or cultivating controversy.
If you’re profiting handsomely from the machine, it’s disingenuous to complain about the noise of its gears.
They tipped off photographers to their locations. Literally I would be sitting next to them while they contemplated who to reach out to. They went to like The Ivy or Hyde Lounge because they knew cameras would be there. They used attention, positive or negative, as career fuel in the era of “all publicity is good publicity.”
This wasn’t passive victimhood. it was transactional.
Lohan was an absolute mess, a fucking shitty person who basically coerced her PA into taking their blame for a DUI.
Brittney spears was a fucking mess who LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED the attention.

I’m so happy that Lyndsay seems to have turned out all right. When she was in her downward spiral a few years ago, it was so sad that someone who was so talented was wasting away their life.
