Hallo allerseits!

It will be literal hell in many aspects. Also beautiful as fuck. But still very taxing.

You will be carrying *a lot* of water. Basically, that’s all that you will carry. Unless you’re willing to drink from lakes and streams (which is pretty safe in Estonia, I totally would, but still). RMK trails are terrible at providing potable water.

Bug situation depends on time of day, weather and location. Anywhere near water, expect clouds of very aggressive mosquitoes. After couple rainy days, as well (they lay eggs in puddles and still water). Mosquitoes will appear in swarms near sunset, be sure to coop up by then or make a large campfire, but they’ll be around ponds and lakes all day. Basic mosquito repellents help a bit, like finnish OFF!, choose the smelliest one and make sure to also spray/gel your hair and clothes and face.

In swamp (especially in Oandu to Aegviidu), it’ll be super tiny fly-like things. They don’t bite or cause any harm, but be in your face all time. If you’re nervous type, they’ll bug you to hell and back.

**Ticks** are only real predator in Estonian forests. Always wear a hat, and make full body check every evening and morning. If you find one unaccounted for couple hours, it’s likely fine. If you don’t do checks and one’s latched on you for days, go to a doctor immediately.

Yes, you can place your tent anywhere. Everyone’s pretty orderly and sane in estonia, so even illegally placed tent doesn’t concern anyone. Just have a bucket of water (better if sand) to take care of campfire going bad, a bag for trash, etc. And nobody will bother you, ever. Or just come say hello, see you’re sane (trash bag, fire prevention), and wish you best of luck.

Do not trust Google maps. Forest trails information is non-existant at best, plain wrong at worst.

Carrying both a heavy tent and water will be the end of you – even if you’re very fit. Ideal party to hike would be minimum of 3 people. One to carry water, one for food/whatever and one for tent. Changing roles as shoulders get ruined and motivation lowers.

The northern part will be most taxing and most amazing, near Aegviidu-Oandu, it’s like walking into new biome every 200 meters. But there’s hills and mosquitoes and so on. So hike itself, while mind-bendingly amazing, will be also very taxing.

I don’t know any camping stores in downtown. The closest to city centre is Matkamaailm in Lasnamäe. Another good store is Matkasport with outlets at Ülemiste, Järve and Rocca al Mare, Ülemiste is the biggest and also closes to the centre.

RMK Oandu-Ikla hiking route is set in the nature without any regard to other spots of interest. You may want look at our coastal and forest trails:

Oandu – Aegviidu – Ardu is particularly bad in this regard as it passes through natural parks mostly. If you want detours then there are not many options:
      – **Altja** is a good starting point with its fishermen culture & museum
      – **Hara** harbour is an excellent choice
      – The manors in Lahemaa are nice – **Palmse** and **Sagadi**
      – **Käsmu** has a small maritime history museum, there is also a hiking trail around the peninsula
      – **Joaveski** has the ruins of an old paper mill, you cannot get in but for anyone interested in industrial heritage this would be interesting
      – Valgejõe has a winery, **Valgejõe Veinivilla**. Now Estonia may not be a well-known wine country but we have recently kickstarted our wine industry, and the lady who runs Valgejõe – Tiina Kuuler – has been the driving force behind this. Their website: [https://veinivilla.ee/en/](https://veinivilla.ee/en/)
      – Kemba – Aegviidu section has many good swimming options but that’s it
      – **Nelijärve Puhkekeskus** is a soviet-time resort (beach, lake and russian families) and may be worth a visit. I really like their canteen and sauna, too.
      – **Kõrvemaa** keskus near Aegviidu has e-bike and discgolf lanes and many hiking related services
      – **Jäneda** has a big manor, a museum and a surprising old settlement site – Jäneda Linnamägi. Musta Täku tall (manor’s stable) is a good pub.

      And that’s about it.

Are you sure that you want to hike on foot? If I were to do the route, I would get a bicycle (from citybike.ee) and panniers and ride it. You can cut through the boring sections fast, you are much more flexible with side trips, and you can leave the bicycle anywhere and explore on foot if you wish.

The map shows the cycling route in blue. I have cycled through the northern parts of the „on foot“ trail with a bicycle, this is doable and I recommend it over cycling on the roads. The nicest part of Oandu-Ikla trail (imho) is Nõmmeveski – Vasaristi section.

      Hello Stranger!

I have done this whole trail, but from Ikla to Oandu, loved it and prefer it that way. If you want to end your hike on a high note, I would also suggest going from Ardu to Oandu. The surrounding is amazing the more up North you go.

      1) Bugs – please vaccinate for TICKS before you go. And also add tick tweezers to your first aid kit and check some tutorials on how to remove ticks.

      https://www.apotheka.ee/puugipintsetid-z-pinsetti-n1-pmm0119474ee

You can also vaccinate in Apotheka: https://www.apotheka.ee/teenused/puukentsefaliidi-vastu-vaktsineerimine/?srsltid=AfmBOopnpHsKU7Bd4_2ef4_-0tpkwtivqpSfjqSXRRa54CRAQ0X5Y3UC

Other bugs like mosquitos might be there waiting for you, so take the spray, I would take it always when outdoors in Estonia from May to September.
You can also buy multipurpose spray both to repel ticks and mosquitos. (And I would also recommend to take pepper spray, probably you will not meet bears, but good to have something in your pocket, you will probably encounter village dogs and not all are friendly).

      2) Tenting – I recommend RMK camping sites. First of all, they have necessary infastructure (fireplace, toilet, camping ground etc). I, personally, also feel mentally better or safer in such camping sites. Plus they are located in amazing places and when you arrive, it feels like a reward and totally enjoyable. Compared to a random roadside, open field or dark and wet woodland. These RMK sites are the best places to stay for a night, trust me.

Secondly, no, you can not put your tent up or make fire anywhere, because even the non-privately owned areas might have restrictions for human activity, as we have a lot of safeguarded nature areas in Estonia. For example, a good amount of your planned track will be in Lahemaa National Park, actually.
So let’s keep the nature and give it its peace by staying a night where humans are meant to camp. That is why the beautiful RMK sites have been created and taken care of regularly.

      3) Matkasport is the specialized outdoor shop https://matkasport.ee/info/6-poed
Ülemiste, Rocca al Mare and Järve shops or get your stuff online.
I would also recommend getting Tactical Foodpack meals, super lightweight and keep you fuelled. Btw, Estonian brand.

Regarding sightseeing. I would also recommend Pärispea peninsula, there are some really weird and ghostly military buildings between the trees. And some pretty cool manors down the road. Go to Käsmu, nice little fishing village.

Huh, that was long. Let me know, if you have any other questions, happy to spread the knowledge. So excited for you, it will be an amazing experience!
