Bad move! It’s discriminatory too. Cutting off living-expenses aid only for foreign doctoral students? This creates a clear double standard. These students are doing the same high-level research as their Japanese peers, but will now be told: „Hey kids, you’re welcome to help our universities succeed, just not enough to help you survive while doing it.“
Japan says it wants more international talent and even set a goal to have 33% of doctoral students be foreign by 2033. These students will just go to Germany, the Netherlands or Canada. Japan just made itself even less competitive.
good for them, now maybe these students will go to countries with better education systems. japanese universities are basically degree mills, and jobs here train you to be a multi-faceted asset for the company rather than an expert in your field(can’t have people mastering marketable skills!)

Among the friends who are attending masters programs here they all tell me you can’t get a job after graduating anyways due to systemic reasons. So yes the talent will leave but it wasn’t like they were being retained or utilized.
This has to be one of the dumbest things they’ve done.
Well let’s hope japanese international students get treated the same then 🤷♀️ there’s a reason these systems get set up but oh well
