The Massacre of the Bologna train station was part of the socalled strategy of tension, where far right and far left terrorist organisations were staging terrorist attacks on high profile figures, such as judges, politicians, trade unionists as well as random people in busy locations.

Several members of the [neo-fascist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-fascist) terrorist organization *Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari* (NAR, [Armed Revolutionary Nuclei](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Revolutionary_Nuclei)) were sentenced for the bombing, although the group denied involvement.

Bologna was targeted for its role of being the biggest left wing city in Italy.

The years of lead run from 1968 to the late 1980 and were characterised by extreme political polarisation and violence, with many terrorist organisations from both the extreme left and extreme right staging attacks on the institutions as well as common people to create a climate conducive to their own objectives.

Far left terrorists, most notably the Red Brigades, wanted the violent overthrow of the democratic institutions. Far right terrorists wanted to heighten tensions to prevent the rise of the PCI (Italian Communist Party) and its role in government. It is documented that these organisations were aided or tolerated by fringes of the Italian state, namely the Secret Services, as well as NATO and the CIA.
