This amounts to not letting the state say “we’re fucking useless and couldn’t be arsed sorting this problem over here and that’s our excuse for not sorting that problem over there”.

The government was arguing that a sudden influx of asylum seekers amounted to exceptional circumstances, or „force majeure“. In other words, saying it was beyond the control of the state.
The ECJ ruled that the state has a responsibility to be able to meet basic requirements, even in times of crisis, and Ireland had failed to even provide meaningful alternatives.
To my mind, that’s correct. The government failing to do something isn’t the same as the government being unable to do something, and they shouldn’t be able to hide their failures in one area behind their failures in another.
At this stage the EU highest court can get fucked.
There are no houses for anybody in Ireland anymore. Not unless you are loaded and even then it’s an issue.
Perhaps the ECJ should workshop a game of musical chairs to assist them to lean into the issues on the ground.
Follow it up with an evening of monopoly just in case there are any gaps in their understanding of the issues involved in our housing market.
Fuck me this thread is a mess. The ECJ isn’t saying that immigrants should get priority over Irish citizens. What they’re saying is that the Irish government made an agreement, and they are now breaking that agreement. It’s not hard to see that the ECJ are chastising the government for not only failing their own citizens by doing the bare minimum to end a housing catastrophe, but now also failing the asylum seekers they have a legal obligation to support.

I agree, the solution is to restrict the intake to guarantee housing for those who come in.
People shitting on EU seem to forget that Ireland got paid generously to take in the refugees, it wasn’t done for free. Court is right to blame the government, so much money and absolutely nothing done. True parasites.
Instead of doing anything sustainable they just shove them into hotels and pay the hotels or throw 4-5 families into 3 bedroom house and pay landlords.
