„Boomers“ needs to be added to this sentence. I was a child when some of this happened. Everyone knew it would be a disaster. No one was fooled for a second that it would lead to better services or cheaper prices. The Boomers wanted to make a fortune from necessities like council houses (which they were basically given) and water and electricity and on and on. They knew exactly what they were doing.
What are we going to do about it? We’ve been banging on about this for decades. No one in this country will ever do anything about it. About anything. 1 part apathy, 1 part selfishness. We get what we deserve.
Fiddle your gas, fiddle your electrics(maybe avoid this one), fiddle your water.
Spare meters can be bought dirt cheap and you’ll easily save 1000s over a couple years. Tutorials online on how to swap your meter and safely test your gas, water meter is even easier.
For years I was paying my rent to India and my biggest bill to France.

Next big timebomb is going to be care homes. They make money hand-over-fist and pay the carers an absolute pittance.
The problem with capitalism is you eventually run out of things to privatise and sell off.
We need to stop blaming boomers for accepting what we all would have accepted. We all know the issue is that politicians for sale since the 80s and CEO greed have ruined everything for all of us
but no big push to go after these people from the politicians, just more anti immigrant crap that wont fix anything.
This is where I feel both the left and right are correct in their critiques of the current setup.
The left in the greed of the companies getting fat off of this.
The right in the government milking people through taxation to enable this.
Using private companies to provide public services is the worst possible situation.
Private cos thrive through competition to deliver a better service at a better cost. Take away that competition and you just end up with max extraction through cost cutting.
Shame on all involved on both sides of this unholy alliance.
