There is no actual logical reason to spend the money it will take to relocate it. It’s in a museum that millions visit year ‚round. Leave it where it is.
The Discovery display at Udvar-Hazy is spectacular. I nearly cried when I saw it the first time and couldn’t wipe the stupid smile off my face as I walked around it. I hope the Smithsonian and its employees can prevent it from being stolen and relocated in Texas.
In my mind, there are two possibilities that will prevent this from happening:
1. As stated in the article, there is no practical current way to transport an orbiter that distance. The heavily modified 747s that used to move them have been mothballed.
2. Maybe the midterms swings both houses of Congress to the dems and they vote to prevent this move from happening.
Now a related question: Is this the kind of thing that we’re going to see every time we have a change in the federal government? National treasures being moved from blue states to red states or visa versa? Is this where we are as a country now?
I can think of a lot of other things that $85m could do to benefit the people that actually paid for this, rather than let the upper elite flex on each other with tax payers money. What a waste.
Even if the Smithsonian didn’t own it, how are you going to move it? Not for the $85 million they got.
I live in Houston and this is stupid.
The Smithsonian 100% should have a shuttle.
The one that pisses is off is the one in New York which did nothing for the space program.
And who owns the Smithsonian… The Smithsonian is about as independent as NASA

I’m 99.9% sure this will not come to fruition. There hasn’t been any legal challenge since the Smithsonian told them to F off. Just a money draining grift.

No doubt someone spent the better part of 6 months convincing Trump that the Discovery WOULD NOT fit into the Oval Office.
I am also sure that the likelihood of it being moved to Mar-a-Lago is 50-50.
As with most of the things Trump does, follow the money, then you’ll figure out why this is being done.
It seems like it sets a bad fucking precedent to insist objects that are federally(?) owned, get moved to states that the current administration favors, without any kind of logical justification.
So what’s next, it gets moved again and again, by every administration, to their favorite state? Is that good for anybody, or history?
