Wouldn’t nuclear be safer than fracking?
There is no real way to ethically extract natural gas or any fossil fuels if people would like a future free of fossil fuels the only why is though nuclear mixed with renewables
Fracked gas is going to get used regardless and the Trump admin has the EU over a barrel on the issue now.
The only real way of improving the situation is to make serious efforts to reduce our reliance on gas. No source of gas is particularly environmentally ethical – they’re all ecological disasters in various flavours of green washed PR.
Instead Ireland ties itself in knots of NIMBYism preventing green energy projects, increasingly indulges people going down the routes of online conspiracy theories fed by the likes of MAGA and blocks every public transit project imaginable. We drag our feet on all of this stuff.
By doing this crap, we end up consuming more gas and oil, including from less than optimal extraction sources.
Fracking toasters
We already have it. We pay the us a premium to pre-process everything because that beauty queen MEP blocked the Shannon LNG plant as far as I know.
Gas is bad wherever it comes from but if we’re going to be using it until 2050 at the earilest, than as long as it isn’t fracked in Ireland, I don’t see why we should care if we use it here.
Let the US do what they would be doing anyway and hopefully the price of energy might drop.
I read an article from an US publication that said the US would struggle to produce the amount of gas required for the deal without limiting it elsewhere. Oil production in the US is flat and most of the gas production (if it is fracked or not) is running at capacity. They would need to seriously ramp up production. I can not remember the figures but one said it would need to triple its current export to the EU.
Also during Trump’s first term he made a similar deal with China and they never followed through on the energy purchase. Also it is only a pledge from the EU, the EU doesn’t have control over what the EU countries and companies do in relation to buying to energy. The EU does want to reduce its reliance on Russian gas though but it also wants to decarbonise. But as with everything there is what the politicians want to do and what they are able to do.
