It is feared that the identity of individuals in the elite Triples units was revealed after a list [containing the personal information of thousands of Afghans](https://inews.co.uk/news/far-right-riots-warning-over-afghan-immigration-cover-up-3807711?ico=in-line_link) applying to move to Britain was accidentally leaked, making them targets for the Taliban.

Funded, trained, and deployed under the close direction of MI6 and the MoD, the “Triples” carried out some of the most dangerous missions of Britain’s war in Afghanistan, including surveillance missions on key targets, including Taliban leaders.

One military source told *The i Paper*: “If they are exposed, the whole integrity of UK intelligence capability is exposed along with them.”

Fresh questions are being raised by intelligence sources about why these soldiers were ever left in Afghanistan. The Taliban’s desire for retribution against them would be “savage”, a former MI6 official said.

The Triples – referring to the Commando Force 333 and the Afghan Territorial Force 444 – were vital to Special Forces operations in Afghanistan to counter the terrorism threat in the aftermath of 9/11, during their 20-year operation in the country.

But when Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021, and the final UK forces left the country, many of the Triples and their families were left at risk of reprisal.

The risk to commandos and their families of retaliation at the hands of the Taliban dramatically increased after the data breach in February 2021, which emerged earlier this month after the High Court ruling lifted a super-injunction banning the leak from being made public.

The brother of a Triples soldier has reportedly been killed in the last fortnight. At least 10 Afghans who helped the West are believed to have been assassinated by the Taliban since the leak was revealed.
