Well done, Ursala, you really showed him . As a European it’s embarrassing.
Not mine but a good summary:
*EU’s trade deal with Trump imposes 15% tariffs on EU exports to the US, while US imports to the EU face zero tariffs, disrupting balanced trade. Described as a „rebalancing“ by Ursula von der Leyen, the deal disadvantages European businesses, particularly Irish pharma, and weakens EU authority. Awful „deal“ for the EU. Calling it a deal isn’t even correct, it’s a capitulation. No doubt they are pinning all their hopes on Trump not being in office for too long.
Important to note that they *haven’t* agreed a deal… there’s no text and nothing is signed.
There was a 75 minute conversation between VdL and Trump and a handshake, and then a lot of the usual triumphalist nonsense from Trump.

Nothing unexpected really. That Trump will put tariffs up was always clear, and the US consumer can change that anytime they choose, by voting someone else in power. And the cost is not enough to move industry away from Europe in the short/medium term.
The EU needs to import Energy anyway, if not from Russia then somewhere else. And we are buying 250 Billions worth from the US anyway.
Only the military equipment is a bit of a disappointment, if it’s true – you never know with Trump, see the Japan deal – would have been smarter and safer to build this stuff ourselves.
This ‚deal‘ needs to be ratified by the member states, and hopefully it won’t be.
How VdL got a second term in office is boggling, frankly. Probably the weakest president the Commission has ever had.

Can some one answer this, but does VdL have the authority to make this deal on her own or must it be voted for and ratified by the member states?
And how the hell does a government agreement have the authority to dictate where private companies invest their funds? Surely if EU companies don’t want to invest 600 billion in the US, they can’t be forced. This would mean the government is asserting control over a private entities money, just cause?
All in all, this all seems bonkers and should in no way move forward or be agreed to.
Yeah. If this isn’t the spark for EU reform nothing is. This literally incentivises the relocation of our pharma industry to the UK given it will me cheaper to import to the US from the UK than Ireland under this deal.
Call your EU representative and demand Ireland blocks this deal.
The EU has no concern about how adversely this affects the Irish economy. They showed the extent of their contempt during the financial crisis when they threw us to the wolves. We will do what we’re told and our politicians know who butters their bread and who calls the tune.
I wouldn’t worry about it. Any deal with Trump isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. It’ll last all of a month, before he’ll forget it, throw a tantrum, then tarrif tarrif tarrif as if the deal never existed.
I’d be voting against this. We should show some balls honestly.
Ursela von der layden is everything that’s wrong with modern Europe. In Irish terms, she’s a Simon Harris.
She failed as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs and as Defense Minister prior to landing her current position, leaving a trail of scandal behind, particularly in her German defense role, where she was widely considered out of her depth. Her only achievement in that position was being the first woman to serve as defense minister.
Most of her time posturing and virtue signalling s
on the world stage. Green policy, integration of migrants, ‚Covid crisis management‘ and intense regulation are her only ‚achievements‘.
Is this what we strive for in Europe?
No ambition or direction the last 15-20 years and have truly been left behind by the US/China who are on course to control all major technology advancement of the future.
I’m such a pro EU person, I live in Prague right now, have been all around Europe, and this is officially my impasse for whether or not I’m pro EU anymore. They’ve been overstepping with federalist policies in the last year or two that have raised my eyebrow, but I always thought that we needed it to help us to be an economic strongarm in the global system, but the fact that we have officially taken it up the ass by Trump of all people, who would have backed down on these within a few weeks anyways, has made me question if we’d be better off on our own. What on earth is the EU providing us at this point that we can’t just do ourselves with our strong soft power diplomacy and the creation of bilateral economic/travel treaties. I know Brexit has been such a strong case study for why leaving the EU would be a bad idea, but part of me think that if this is the amount of money we are spending on blowing foreign nations, the EU will never be the economic superpower that I hoped for it to be. Fuming at this news
Simon Harris named by the FT as one of the main players responsible for scuppering a firm response from the EU:
„Simon Harris, trade minister of Ireland, was a frequent caller [to Maroš Šefčovič, EU trade commissioner]. He wanted to save the country’s pharmaceutical, spirits and beef industry from any US counterpunch and let the world — not least the Americans — know with frequent social media posts.“
What can we do to prevent this trade deal? How many countries need to stand up to veto this? How do we get von der Leyen removed? She’s more concerned about the US keeping their technological edge than about the welfare of Europe, she is an agent for the US not the EU.
We need to oppose this.
