kind of feels ironic when the right wing sentiment is on the rise here in Japan.
Yes, let’s build more works of dubious value to the people who live there that are almost guaranteed to cost more money that they make.
Check out the “Rebooting Cool Japan Strategy” (クールジャパンのリブート). This is just more soft power flexing. Tokyo already has a United Nations Information Centre and the United Nations University. This isn’t going to replace New York or Geneva. I hope it’s more than just a strategic move. Maybe Japan actually wants to align with global norms on integration, gender equity, and digital systems, but if it doesn’t, it’s not going to host a modern international institution. I like the idea of “Cool Japan,” but not the way it’s being handled. Other countries are already remixing Japanese pop culture with their own twist, the same way Japan does with theirs. You can’t gatekeep culture, and you definitely don’t need Tokyo’s stamp of approval to be doing it right.
Politicians related to the …ahem…building trades community will push it hard. They should be able to triple the estimated price of the buildings.
