      > One third of the 210 seats will the appointed by interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, with the rest to be elected.

Even if this is a free and fair election, done well and without interruption by sectarian violence or government intrusion, a two-thirds election doesn’t quite produce what I would consider free and fair results.

    2. Here we see Al-Jolani and Ash-Sharaa still pretending to go through with sham elections as part of their theatrical production of democracy put on for the rest of the world.

    3. They aren’t normal election were the whole population can vote for. It’s a electoral college in every province that votes.

“Unlike previous elections in Syria, the 2025 election will be held under a provisional, indirect electoral system. Of the 210 seats, 140 members of the People’s Assembly (MPAs) will be filled through a district-based electoral college system, with MPAs selected by local committees composed of experts and community figures. The remaining 70 MPAs will be appointed directly by the president, with no seats being elected by direct popular vote.”

“Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said that there was a lack of infrastructure to allow for direct election, and Syrian Human Rights lawyer Anwar al-Bunni said that „the absence of political work, parties, and political activism“, in addition to the need to register displaced people and deceased people, as well as the Assad regime granting citizenship to large numbers of Iranian militants, meaning that the indirect system was ‚logical‘ until the infrastructure for direct elections could be established, which could take up to four years to organise.”

    4. Does this mean the country is safe and people who have fled the country are good to return?

    5. People criticizing these elections, think George Washington and the American revolutionaries setup up a government with elections right after July 4th .

It’s phenomenal how all these Americans in the comments throw the word democracy around, but spend 90% of their reddit career complaining about their country.

If the system doesn’t work for you, don’t get all arrogant and impose it on others, like damn.
