When will the Carney government double the rate of 🇨🇦 home-building and fulfill their election commitment? Hard to see this promise become reality w/o providing public land resources to government housing providers.
It won’t be the key. As usual, the government will have missed the boat on solving an existential problem for Canadians, and the market will solve it as usual.
There’s over 3000 empty condos in Toronto alone that no one wants to buy, there’s thousands more for sale and occupied that no one wants to buy either.
Immigration is flatlined, mortgages rates are up and rents are falling.
So now we’re going to flood the trades with new entrants, just in time for there to be no work in 4 years when they get their ticket.
This issue was always going to sort itself out if immigration had just kept at historical levels.
This is so depressing. Will people ever wake up and realize that developers, government, and co-ops do NOT build housing?
These are merely entities that; navigate overly-complex regulatory compliance, acquire land that is expensive due to artificial scarcity caused by speculation and historically low land taxes (thanks to dev fees), provide capital, and do sales.
All housing has had the same source through all of history until today: workers.
Return to a regulatory and tax environment that allowed workers to create their own housing, and new, quality, spacious housing WILL return to the <$200K price range.
No crazy spending or new program necessary.
This is the single greatest problem facing our society right now, and no policy makers are putting in the effort to understand how it connects to temporary foreign workers and dropping fertility rates.
We are making our country poorer and less equal every day, for no fucking reason other than people don’t want to be less wealthy on paper.
Too quietly. And they better hit the ground running. We don’t have many years to do reports and meetings etc before actually building.
Its kinda cute watching everybody impatiently fumble around Carney .. Let him cook , if we wanted insignificant, short sighted , political based plans for votes and not long term results then we should have voted in our usual politicians.
Wouldn’t it be easier to just give CHMC back their mandate to build housing again so we aren’t wasting as much money on new government employees.
