Genuine question, why not just say it was founded by the Aztecs? It’s not like they were some mysterious society no one’s ever heard of. Like, imagine if someone wrote the same thing about, say, Cardiff. It’d sound weird, but technically be just as accurate.

So wait, maybe I’m misremembering my history here, but didn’t the Spanish destroy Tenochtitlan? I was under the impression that Mexico City was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan shortly afterward. I don’t think counting of a city’s age generally works like that?
