It isn’t free childcare, repeat after me! Our son’s nursery charge for “consumables” (food, materials for activities) and they’ve also increased the fees by £15 an hour more this year. And as always, the hours are only applicable during term time.
Un-costed, under-funded freebies cynically given away by the Tories on election year?! I’m shocked!
I’m not sure who is more at fault though, Tories for laying the trap or Labour for falling for it. Every major financial institution, think tank and commentator was very clear that either government spending needs to come down or taxes need to come up.
Labour & Conservatives promised Jam today and Jam tomorrow. You reap what you sow.
Everything is a crisis and is causing a black hole, do we have anything left to sell? Or have previous government sold everything or destroyed anything this country had of value? The future is not looking bright.

You don’t get to keep saying it for sympathy.
An extra £1bn seems like peanuts for a scheme like this. If anything it should be extended to 50 hours and out of term time to cover a full working week.
With young children there’s always a decision between one of the parents working and the cost of childcare. The 30 free hours heavily incentives part time work which is great but roll the scheme out further and it will get more people back full time.
How did they get uptake wrong by 24%? Are there secret children they didn’t know about? Perhaps they thought some people would insist on paying 🧐
It’s actually 30 hours free, during term time, which is advertised as being for 9 months olds but is actually kicks in when most children turn 1. Which removes the incentive to work for new mum’s quite a bit for the first 3 months unfortunately the strain is still there.
I thought the VAT on private schools was supposed to pay for this
As a government you have to invest in things that will benefit the economy and population in future
There is no clearer example than investing in increasing birth rate, fail to incentivise more births and we will be in deep, deep trouble
More money for kids, less for old people

We pay £1,200 a month or so for our nursery for 1 kid nothing included but food and drink, and it’s only 4 days a week.
I was looking into childcare costs in London as someone who is considering a kid. Some people paying 2k a month.
The only solution seemed to be for both me and partner to somehow work 4 days, condense hours or work weird times then send kid in for 3 days a week. With the 30 hours, sounds like it’d still be 500 a month at least.
Gf says in France it’s like 100 quid a month. Same in Germany.
What’s going on in this country!
God forbid you want to have a family and be productive and have something at the end of the month.
The biggest mistake was not reversing the NI increase. It’s a massive open goal for employers to slash and burn and blame it on increased costs.
The UK government needs to get a fucking grip.
“Free” childcare is nothing of the sort. This is an investment in the care of very young people, that one would hope will grow to become the economic contributors of our future.
If you want to save money look at the massive elephant in the room: the pension triple-lock. It is insane and it is only a recent introduction. It needs scrapped asap. Stop taking money away from those who are starting their journey in life and giving to those who have already lived(and had a great time doing so).
