Bessent said over 75% is trade free from USMCA and RBC estimated it could be as much as 94% if all the paperwork is done.
Reality is we don’t really need a deal soon, we already have a deal that covers most trade.
ETA. Trump’s take away comment is „“We haven’t really had a lot of luck with Canada. I think Canada could be one where there’s just a tariff, not really a negotiation.“
Which is kind of a nothing burger because it is now assumed that Canada will have to eat some level of baseline tariff unless we give up supply management, fork over another $100 billion for the Golden Dome, buy Trump another Air Force One plane or give in to whatever whim happens to be top of mind for him on any given day.
All we would have to do to make him become focused on addressing it real quick would be to announce a 100% export ban on potash effective August 1 if there’s no deal in place. That would starve the American agricultural sector into collapse, and most farmers are rural/MAGA supporters. It would also leave Trump with 2 choices, either cave on an amenable trade deal with Canada, or lose face and look like a complete wanker by having to beg Putin or Belarus for potash exports.
I feel like he’d choose to work with Canada over looking weak to Putin.
