Genuine question, what exactly happens in an exorcism that causes harm?

I know there are forms of conversion therapy that are absolutely horrendous. But in an exorcism they are basically commanding demons to leave your body, and given that demons don’t actually exist, how is that harmful?

Is there more to it than that?
