Turns out growing the public service at 2x the rate of population growth and expanding total public sector employment by nearly 50% in the last 10 years through unsustainable fiscal policy was a bad idea.

The quote just keeps getting better and better, hopefully they continue to cut the bloated areas.
What’s the context here? How many federal public service jobs are we at right now? Is that high or low given our population of 40 million? Can we compare ourselves to other countries of similar population? If we’re double the number of public service workers compared to everyone else for example, doesn’t that indicate we’re bloated? We need more numbers and figures before reacting.
A quick search finds that the current federal public service is around 365,000 staff. Since 2015 that has grown by about 100K (a very large increase I would say). To cut 60K positions would bring it back to about 2020 levels. From the perceptive it doesn’t seem unreasonable to cut that many jobs. There has been some growth the federal govt scope with some new programs created since 2015, but a 40%+ growth in employees seemingly definitely outpaced the growth of the scope and role of the federal government.
This has to be done. The PS can’t grow 40% in 10 years when population only grew 15%. When people say things are “broken” this is what they mean. And the Liberals doing this is proof that the PSC is “broken”.
Before we all jump too far down the rabbit hole – I think it’s worth noting that this is NOT a release from the federal government, it’s a report by a think tank.
It’s a prediction – using analysis and things available at this time publicly sure – but it is still a prediction. Until we start to see what moves the feds actually start to make, outside of the directives we’ve seen so far, there’s no telling whether this prediction is too high, too low, or bang on.
So many people already are talking like this was a direct quote from the Cabinet – it wasn’t and it isn’t.
We should be prepared for cuts – as we know the cost savings departments have already been directed to find – but we don’t fully know where that number is going to land or how.
