It makes sense. If they need to build roads, and manage healthcare it would make sense they get to have control for the population growth plan.

Imagine having the temerity to say this with a 7% unemployment rate (14% for youth!). It’s incredible because even with the late Trudeau cuts, the number of migrant workers is still near record levels. Also, this is unconstitutional; provinces do have the power to pass laws regarding migration, but federal law prevails whenever this is any conflict. And It’s clear if Ontario started pumping work permits that would conflict with federal targets for temporary migrants.
Now I suppose Ford might try the classic ’no one will stop me‘ loophole, guessing the federal government won’t sue. Quebec has done this recently with great success; doing things like abolishing the oath to the monarchy even though they technically can’t do that. And I can picture Carney not suing if Ford does this to maintain good provincial relations, but I really hope he doesn’t go this route. It would truly be an apocalyptic precedent, and politically disastrous for Carney too, if he can’t meet his TR targets when the next election comes.

Can’t see the article, but I assume that means they’re getting hammered by their corporate sponsors to get the immigration numbers back up.

People only make a big stink about immigration because the federal government is run by the Liberal Party. Tim Houston won a huge majority while openly running on doubling the population of NS and not one single person cried about that. Same thing with Doug Ford in Ontario.
If PP became PM and inevitably let in more people than the Liberals, the same people crying about wage suppression and immigration would be dead silent because their people are in power. They’d be ignoring it and would be excited because they paid 100$ less in federal income taxes.
