They’ve had 30-fucking years just like the entire world had 50-fucking years to address climate change. Humans never learn.

    2. The solution that was found: Porn on every TV channel in prime time, to remind the Japanese how it’s done.

      Hey, it works with pandas!

A sensible policy. Hope Europe looks into this too.

Cost of housing and utilities in the UK is deterring people from having kids. Media, porn, social media all have some part to play in all of this too. But when housing costs, water bills, electricity all go through the roof in price, people don’t have money to raise kids, and it is just the private equity who bought all this stuff that are given room to grow. Everyone else is being squeezed out.

Tax this kind of wealth. Don’t tax people more, who earn double the average income, because these people have worked hard to get into that income bracket, and keep having to work hard to maintain their income bracket.

Tax the ultra-wealthy, who’s stashes of gold, land and coin earn them millions and billions every year just through interest. The interest the rest of us have to pay for when we take out mortgages or loans. This is the kind of wealth that is bleeding our societies dry.

    4. Good luck, they’re all about isolating themselves and have a superiority complex that’s bred a lot of racism even to nearby east Asians.

Also that toxic work culture isn’t going away anytime soon.

These are major issues you don’t solve in one generation since it’s been woven into the fabric of their culture and identity for ages.

As societies modernise and people are able to make their own family planning decisions this is what happens.

Obviously work culture and the economy has some effect but it’s naive to think humans will start popping out enough babies to sustain the population if you make it easier for them. Some people just don’t want to.

This is just something developed countries eventually have to deal with and acting like everyone should start having as much children as possible is backwards nonsense.

I don’t think anyone has actually found a solution to this, unfortunately, despite plenty of attempts worldwide.

If Japan allowed dual citizenship I’d think about moving there when the US implodes…

A declining population will force countries to make significant changes. Perhaps the introduction of robots for labor and a universal basic income will help fix this problem. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening without considerable resistance.

Immigration? Not really their thing. Two percent immigrants or somewhere around there .

turn off the internet for like 3 weeks and you’ll have a bunch of new pregnancies.

    11. I can imagine lots of western weebs hoping there’s an announcement asking them to move to Japan and breed like rabbits. For every baby they make, they get a box of manga and anime dvds.

I mean they literally could do so many things and choose absolutely nothing. They already know the issue is cost of living and working hours all they have to do is follow Singapore methods and build affordable housing and raise wages/slash hours to solve this issue. All the governments want greed and are upset people can’t have greed and kids and also work to death.

    13. Turns out parenting is really hard and when given a choice a lot of people don’t consider the end result worth all the sacrifices. The only incentive a government could offer is subsidizing 110% of the cost of child care. And that’s not a typo. You can’t just make it slightly cheaper and expect to coerce people into accepting a multi-decade full-time commitment; governments need to cover all the costs and then actively pay the parents on top of that. If children are actually valuable to governments, then they need to pay out what they’re worth and stop acting entitled to free capital.

South Korea cooked their population with a crushing work culture. Collectivist societies seem to not mesh well with capitalism because no one actually tries to be different and make change. Corps take over

    15. Would be better served coming up with new economic systems that don’t rely on endless growth, or even stable population levels.

Scandinavian countries have shown us that you can throw the best support systems and living conditions at a populace and you will still see declining birth rates.

Children are a pain to deal with, especially these days with more pressure than ever on parents to do more for their kids than in generations past.

Immigration is a bandaid that will not solve the core issue, and will unfortunately create social tension with the amount needed. Shouldn’t be that way, but that’s just how many humans are wired.

Slowly phase in automation, in a manner that does not displace existing workers but fills in gaps that remain after current ones retire. Ensure that nobody who is willing to work remains unemployed by mandating that companies hire and train them, and pay them properly. Many of the existing worker shortages are due to poor pay, work conditions, and unwillingness to train. Though I don’t think this is as big of an issue in Japan.

    16. Miffernator on

      Simple. don’t blame foreigners.
Better working conditions and up there pay rate.
      Family traditions need to change.
      Old conservative Japan needs to
Change. Teach the kids that Japan did bad things in the past, this helps with Japanese to not be conservative. Japan is flawed and needs to change. Also housing should not be a business.

    17. whydidistartmaster on

Okay, I know very little about japan but this headline come and go over the years. This indicates that the problem is structural and cannot be fixed with one policiy.

First, you need a change of leadership from some 60 year old as they would care about current populations prosperty that the next generations as they wont be around to see it. They will say some flashy words and wont act on anything to save themself.

Second, both parents working should be optional not mandatory to live. You need abundance of resources to have kids. Its not possible to feed something just enough and expect offsprings from that.

Third, issue reforms that will ensure that mothers that take time of from work for extended amount of time can return to their job. It should not be a career dead sentence to have kids.

Non of them can be done under the current system and something has to change before you broke the society.

    18. aspiring_scientist97 on

They’ll never will because the solution is basically immigration

    19. isnortmiloforsex on

They are mathematically cooked if they continue on their current path. Judging by their attitude, there is no saving them. Their grifters are just gonna grift until there is no Japan anymore in a few decades.

    20. bahaggafagga on

Nah, its gg no re for Japan and most other countries this far into population decline. It is already too late to avoid a pretty large collapse.

    21. Hey japan crazy idea but maybe a 6 day 12 hour a day work week will basically destroy dating. What do I know tho, im a gaijin

    22. Sea_Bread2884 on

Their corporations have to really just stop being soo greedy and let these people live, not just live for work

    23. Infamous-Echo-2961 on

Address your work culture and that’ll help a fucking lot.

Work life balance and good wages means people will have time and money to have kids. Make that hard….
