Submission Statement: This article explores the dramatic increase in how much we value a statistical life and how it impacts everything from parenting to pandemic responses. I argue this creates a ’safety-risk feedback loop‘ that has many positives, but could also lead to societal stagnation. I think this raises crucial questions for the future: If we continue on this path, will we lose the dynamism required for major breakthroughs? How do we balance the undeniable good of a safer world with the need for risk-taking and exploration? Finally, how does the rising premium of life interface with AI, both in terms of existential risk and in terms of potential longevity breakthroughs?
