I can’t believe this is where a council is choosing to spend resources. With all the issues we’re facing, crumbling roads, bins not being collected on time, cuts to essential services, and rising council tax, they somehow think this is a priority?

Even there argument is flawed. *’Cllr Frost warned that decisions affecting Cornwall are too often made in Westminster without Cornish voices at the table‘,* you mean with the exception of the 6 Cornish MPs who sit in parliament? How exactly does this guy thinks a parliamentary democracy works?

So they’ll naturally not want any financial assistance from the UK government and with the high employment they enjoy in Cornwall (cough) and all of their diverse businesses and revenue streams outside of seasonal tourism I’m sure they’ll be a hugely beneficial fifth nation to the rest of the UK

We need to go to a flat per person funding model and then places can be nation’s or areas or whatever they want and funding will be fair and efficient.

I’m Cornish. This is a joke.. always talking about independence, imagine if they decided to cut off funding to Cornwall and had to be self sufficient.. would be fucked. Unlike many other areas of England Cornwall in particular has a distinct culture, ethnicity and even some language factors that put it if not quite on par with the distinctions that Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, then not far behind.

Can’t wait for every county to suddenly desire independence from England. What’s next, Wessex? Mercia? Northumbria? All the pre-english petty kingdoms? The logic here is so dumb.

A separate nation is a daft ask, and we shouldn’t apply the Barnet formula to Cornwall any more than we’d apply it to Sussex, Wessex, or Mercia — but I would absolutely support Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset having an area with the powers equivalent to a Metropolitan mayor like Burnham.

As a Devonian, I have been saying for years that every bridge over the Tamar should be dismantled and they should go and play their funny games by themselves. And when they come crawling back begging forgiveness, we should pretend not to hear them.

Okay then, go for it. No offense but a quick research tells me Cornwall is one of the poorest parts of the uk per capita gdp.

Mostly a tourist income which is fine and would still occur but it’s not going to cause more tourism by becoming a nation.

You’ve got the dairy industry which is great but you haven’t got a monopoly on good dairy produce and thus can’t be raising prices to offset deficits, demand isn’t there anymore than it is now.

I don’t see what this is about besides some pride. We’ve all got that in the counties from which we are from. I’m from Warwickshire, shall I take a stand to reform the kingdom of Mercia?!
