Trudeau, probably with recommendations from Carney, grew the bureaucracy by 40% to pad the economy along with housing. This was never sustainable.
Very glad to see these cuts. Proud to see fiscal conservatism and pragmatic fiscal accountability enter the room after JT destroyed Canada.
Yeah I’ve gotta say, I already didn’t vote for Carney because he seemed like he was just a conservative in Liberal clothing, but he’s been even worse than I thought he’d be on that front. Not excited to go back to Chrétien era austerity
Pretty misleading how the article doesn’t mention our deficit at any point. These cuts aren’t just so we can spend more on the military, our fiscal situation is absolute mess esp when we already have highest taxes in G7.
Crazy people are so into the kind of politics that put Canada on the path to the mess it’s in right now from 20-40 years ago. Neoliberal austerity didn’t work the last dozen times, but this time for sure it will result in good things. I could get behind the nation building stuff if it was actual public infrastructure or utilities and not just more public-private-partnership graft and carbon industry subsidizing.
I guess some people still believe that the level of spending of the previous government was sustainable, especially in the current economic context. However, I think one issue with these cuts is that all departments are expected to find the same level of savings when in fact some departments may have to contribute more and other less.
Lol this is what conservatives usually want right? Cuts in spending? They should be cheering. Or will conservatives flip flop and try to own the libs by advocating on everything that’s the opposite of what Carney is doing, which would be increase in spending for public services?
the cuts haven’t even happened yet? Like we know they’re on the way, but we’re still missing a lot of the „how.“ We should definitely be skeptical and ask lots of questions, but it feels a bit premature to start saying how bad it’s going to be, when we don’t even know what „it“ is.
I’ve really come to hate the partisan posturing in the media that occurs before facts come out so that one media org can scoop the others and both the liberals and conservatives are guilty of it. I don’t want cuts to the public sector, at least any more than are really necessary, but anticipating them and dropping an opinion piece to get ahead of the actual announcement is the kind of shit that either drives disengagement or polarization. Neither of which are things we need right now.
