One of the cool things about this book is the chapter on the American Civil War.
It’s actually kind of unsettling how precarious of a position the United States was in when the south seceded. You had the British in Canada of course and the French were in Mexico trying to install an Austrian noble as King of Mexico (Maximilian).
The USA had to work with the Russian Czar to augment the Union Naval Blockade to deter more direct European involvement. Once the war concluded, we bought Alaska in part to help pay back Russia for their assistance during the Civil War.
Another part is some of the Jesse James stuff. It can be thrilling to learn about conspiracies from the 1800s lol.
