I hate to agree with Smith on basically anything being that she’s one of the wort premiers our province has ever had (alongside Kenny), but I will say that a broken clock is at least right twice a day. (at least with the gist of what she’s saying about leaving supply management and not what she’s proposing as an alternative in the article, which is idiotic“

It’s crazy how much political capital the dairy industry has in Canada.
I’ll never forget Andrew Scheer gulping down glasses of milk at pretty much every campaign event in 2019.
Every province would put provincial restrictions on Alberta and then states would finish it off by flooding the markets further then what they already are .

WTF?!? Is that an acceptable comment from a premier to another province? I get that each province has issues with the other, but that doesn’t mean they have to be so publicly antagonistic to each other. That’s just such a juvenile comment.
Also, she talks about Alberta having it’s own supply management system, but I thought they were all managed at the provincial level already?
Her comment about sticking a finger in Quebec’s eye notwithstanding, this may be a good thing for Alberta and Canada. If Alberta is able to move to a market based system, we will have real world evidence and data to reform SM in rest of Canada. Let’s say, 5 years from now, Albertans are paying half of what we pay for milk, eggs, and poultry, and they are seeing the benefits of a market based system, then there would be a push in other provinces to adopt a market based system too.
Supply management is kind of terrible but needed as the US heavily subsidizes dairy production. In Canada we have quotes to make sure farms can make money and the government doesn’t need to subsidize them because the consumer is paying the whole cost. Stability has a cost… Look at the US egg situation…
All Smith has is spite and divisiveness. It’s all she offers to Alberta. I don’t understand how she has any support but I guess this is what voters want?? Her province is falling apart at the seams. Preventable diseases are spreading. Whatever ‚Alberta advantage‘ the province once had has been wasted and thrown away while a separatist conspiracy theorist runs amok in office….
Who on Earth thinks this would be a good idea? Alberta farmers would be fucked if we ended supply management. Has Smith learned absolutely nothing from her province’s history? The reason the PCs had a death grip on the province for so long was because the party in power before them royally pissed off the farmers and they basically turned it into a religion to vote for the PCs. The NDP got a lot of hate because their farm safety bill upset a lot of farmers. Jim Prentice lost to the NDP partially because he pissed off the farmers with his budget just before he called an election (and partially because he also pissed off all of the unions).
So she’s cool with directly subsidizing her dairy farmers? Because that’s the result, either that or the collapse of the dairy industry due to the cheap cost of heavily subsidized American dairy
Danielle Smith is a very good American politician. She does everything in her power to ensure that the American economy prosper, regardless of the consequences on Canada.
It’s pretty obvious that this woman is scrambling for any connection she can cut to try and disentangle with the rest of the country. I don’t know if she anticipated how popular the cpp is or how unpopular an Alberta Police would be.
Looking forward to her trying to somehow remove the CBC from the province or mandating the renaming of poutine to „_Alberta Beef_ Fries with cheese“.
Love this idea. Let them demonstrate for the rest of us what a failure it would be. Just like the way they regulate their power grid.

I frequently think Canada would be a better place if it was an American state. It would be quicker and easier if the rest of Canada were to vote
Of course as part of the financial settlement Alberta would pay the cost of the trans mountain pipeline if they want to use it and the billions of federal money to get the tar sands going plus money set aside to remediate the tar sands when empty.
