Won’t that take the fun out of the Notting Hill crime carnival?

The problem with NHC is that too many people attend.

Every bank holiday weekend is a nightmare in that area. It’s not just that it attracts criminals – it’s the people urinating on your front door or littering that makes it unpleasant for some local residents.

Whether it’s effective or not, it seems that live facial recognition could be coming to more public places in London soon. Already being trialled for tube stations to catch fare dodgers, apparently:

Is there any sort of consultancy / legal hurdles for implementing this sort of surveillance?

Not trying to fear monger, just connecting the dots of recent technologies and government actions and propositions.

If you can’t see how far this could go, mix it with the proposed digital ID which gives you access to banking, the NHS and other public services. Let’s say you go to a protest and the government doesn’t like it, they know you were there because you were caught on facial recognition; or you’re seen with someone who’s known to have ties with groups the government doesn’t like. Your digital ID doesn’t need to be revoked, but your priority on accessing public services is lowered meaning you have to wait longer to see a doctor, or your benefits might be revoked. Alternatively if they do revoke your digital ID, you can’t access any public services.

This is not far fetched, we’ve already seen with the proscription of Palestine Action and those in support getting arrested simply for holding signs. With Facial recognition and Digital ID combined, they don’t need to arrest you, they can simply just make navigating public life impossible.

We’ll go one step further and add that some police forces are already using Palantir to scrape databases and social media to build a profile that can be matched to you by means of facial recognition. If you post something or are involved with groups that promote ideas the government doesn’t like, effectively thought crime, then refer to the previous paragraph.

Facial recognition in and of itself is not the issue here (although there are many issues with it in terms of ethics), it’s how it will be used in conjunction with other systems and by authorities.

We’ve also already seen this in the real world, where people have been mistakenly identified by Facial Recognition and barred from shops for suspected shoplifting, and any shop using the same system will also have you listed on their barred list, making it impossible to use a supermarket.

It’s an incredibly authoritarian enabling technology and if you don’t think it will be abused, think again. It’s a very slippery slope into full on Orwellian authoritarianism and you won’t be immune to its effects.

Then football matches, arenas, train stations etc Rapidly gaining momentum until it’s fully normalised 

“Why don’t you go and lock up rapists and murderers?”

Police invest in tech to help catch such people.
