I know nothing they can do, as Police etc useless – but making spending time on the Highstreet even more unappealing isn’t going to bring spend back to town centres.
So making online shopping more desirable then.
It’s a two edged sword really.
This is only going to continue sadly.
If the law isn’t going to be enforced then people will break it.
There was a documentary on this on the BBC and it isn’t solely poor people stealing what they need, it’s people taking what they can get away with also.
Policing is obviously needed, but can’t see how you’re going to fully stop this unless we get the average British person feeling better off and when economic growth is neglible or non-existent that’s hard to do.
People have to feel that their role in society is working for them and a lot of people don’t.
That’s before we get into the ethics itself in detail and what’s caused them to decline.
I ventured into a barren little town called Stafford a while back, was in the area and needed a key cutting.
Town is practically dead.
Tiny little timpson shop.
Whilst waiting I asked the guy what his rates are on the unit. £13k a year.
For a tiny little timpsons.
That’s a lot of keys and shoe repairs to cover that.
Imagine trying to open an independent bakery with that.. how much bread. This why coffees are a fiver.
13k a year for a tiny little shop.. just in a tax.. no bin collections. That’s on top.. and rent… Utilities and wages..
Rates are the real killer of the high street. It’s like councils would rather they sit empty and collect nothing rather than drop them 75%, take something, create something.
Can’t believe there are so many struggling single parents stealing bread and baby food from O2 these days
Wasn’t that long ago people on Reddit were defending shoplifters.
Greed kills town centres. Greedy councils with their extortionate rates and greedy landlords with their extortionate rents. And don’t get me started on the parking issues!
Must be all those classical music fans and goths causing trouble.
It seems to me that rent rates for shops should exist.
On paper.
However the shop does not pay them
Instead 1% of their profits AFTER tax should be paid to the lease holder UPTO the maximum rental charge of 6k per year. After that cap is met the profits remain with the vendor.The rent cap is fixed and can never be changed. COUNTRY WIDE.
BUT…councils can lower them to attract more business.
If the cap is NOT met the leaseholder has to accept that.
This is one theory as to how a high street revival might work.
Many other things could be added. Price matching for items online against shop prices for example.
Only the Cannabis Shops in South Africa operate with a locked door policy (understandable, same in the US)
Let’s not pretend this isn’t getting out of hand. It’s hard to justify living in the UK to my partner when the safety aspect is declining
They just need to argo’s it, and while it’s not great for the consumer, crime needs to be shut down before it gets really out of hand.
Cool, so another nail in the coffin of our high street.
Further accelerating the death of the high street. It will just put people off going anywhere they absolutely do not need to go to and small businesses will die off that much quicker.
Some stores seem to let shoplifters operate.
The Asda near me has a device at the exit of the self scanners that closes, preventing you from leaving if it senses items that haven’t been scanned.
A guy walked up with several bags for life worth of goods, doesn’t scan any, the device locks… member of staff walks over and unlocks it for him. He starts walking, goes through a set of traditional anti theft scanners that beep, and immediately runs down the escalators. Security guy watching the cameras 2 feet away doesn’t even move.
Won’t the fire brigade have something to say about that?

I also note the majority of the comments on here are about business rates etc – which aren’t the issue here. Business rates aren’t forcing O2 to keep their doors locked.
I was in Poundland yesterday and saw a couple of guys stuffing bottles of fabric softener into their backpack before trying to sneak out. A staff member saw them and swiped at their bag so everything spilled out. The 2 guys just left like nothing happened. Is shoplifting no longer prosecuted? 🤔
Also, is there like a fabric softener black market coz why steal that of all things
There’s a lot of bad information in this comment section.
Your local council aren’t the bad guys when it comes to business rates. They just collect the money, every single penny of it goes straight to the central government, the local council keep none of it.
There’s business rates relief for small businesses too, for a single premises. If the rateable value of a business‘ sole premises is £12K or less, they pay zero rates. If the rateable value is £12K to 15K there’s a sliding scale between 0% at £12K and 100% at £15K. Which is quite the sharp increase.
Some examples. Rateable value of:
£12K or less – pay nothing
£13K – pay 33% of rateable value = £4.3K
£14K – pay 66% = £9.2K
£15K – pay 100% = £15K
Pretty harsh having to pay 100% at £15K rateable value, but nothing at £12K ratable value!
Well obviously, this boosts economic growth as the items stolen willl have to be replaced by the store and thus production increases. Furthermore police and security will have to be hired and such jobs are being created.
Not to mention the increased flows of cash in the insurance sector.
All in all a splendid proof that immigration boosts GDP.
