      Judge Dredd. Taika Waititi.

      Those two names have studio heads and executives sitting up this week as one of the hottest packages of the year hits the Hollywood marketplace.

      Waititi, the Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit filmmaker, is attached to direct a new feature film take on Dredd, the popular and violent British comic book character.

      Drew Pearce, the scribe known for his action movie-filled resume thanks to titles such as Fall Guy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is attached to write the script.

      Producers include Dredd rights holders Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley and Ben Smith of Rebellion Developments, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso and Pearce.

      Sources say Pearce and Waititi both grew up with the books and are friends who have been trying to find a project to work on together for years.

      Created in the late 1970s by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, Dredd debuted in the pages of weekly British anthology 2000 AD. He is a police officer in the bleak future metropolis of Mega-City One, part of a law enforcement corps that empowers officers to be judge, jury, and executioner. The character and his stories were a satire on a judicial system taken to the extreme. Dredd proved hugely popular, engendering several more comics and comics strips, video and board games, books, and even postage stamps in the United Kingdom. It is said that over 100,000,000 comics and graphic novels have been sold.

      The character was given the glossy Hollywood treatment in 1995 with a big-budget adaptation that starred Sylvester Stallone. It was poorly received. More warmly was the reception for Dredd, a 2012 adaptation that starred Karl Urban with a script by Alex Garland, the writer behind 28 Days Later, who also wrote and directed Civil War.

      The logline is being kept under the visor, but the pitch is said to take inspiration more from the comics than the previous screen iterations, leaning into the world-building and dark humor. It is also meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.

      I may be one of the few people who liked the last judge dredd. Really satisfies the “just blow shit up” side of my cinematic pedigree.

      I love the 2012 film so I should be excited but I haven’t liked any of this guy’s movies so I’m not optimistic about this one.

      It looks like this is an entirely different direction from Dredd 2012. If Karl Urban isn’t in this after finally making a name for himself with Star Trek and The Boys I’m going to be disappointed. He made Dredd awesome and has been pushing for a sequel or series for years.

      Only if Billy Butcher is Dredd again. Also, Taika should not be involved in this what soever!

      That’s great. Judge Dredd is known for its zany comedy. Match made in heaven.

      Dress was such an awesome riff on the The Raid.

      It was an excellent intro to a slice of the world and the judges etc. *And then, nothing.*

      When Taika is restrained, he is a solid director, he has a lot of heart in his earlier movies. And I enjoyed his take on Thor first time around.

      But when he is given full control, it just becomes infantile. He is ok in small doses.

      **But I don’t see how he is right for this IP.**

      He’s like Gunn who is similar but definitely a better writer and director, works well for campy comic stuff. I haven’t seen Superman, but given the old cartoons and comics is a solid choice for that genre, **Taika would be best sticking to those films too.** ie not this.

      Who knows though, I’m glad to have more Dredd, maybe playing him Super serious in an overly ridiculous story/world might actually play ok…..

      **EDIT: I’ve hurt fans feelings.**
      Look I know a ridiculous story isn’t ideal, but HE is directing and I still think as long as he plays Dredd serious it might be ok (not good). Robocop style, even that is asking a bit much.

      **But honestly we all know this is probably going to be awful and is a puzzling choice**

      I’d love to see a sequel to Karl Urbans Dredd, but seeing as movie producers seem to get a kick out of ruining cool stuff for no good reason nowadays, I’m not gonna hold my breath.

      Dredd? Hell yeah. 

      Directed by this man? Hell no! 

      I do like Taika Waititi, he just has a very specific niche and Dredd is not it.

      I still want the Dredd tv series they were trying to make with Urban but I don’t think it ever went anywhere 🙁

      If he fucked up Thor, what makes ANYONE think he can possibly do Dredd?!

      How did people see everything he has done and think that Judge Dredd of all things is his thing…..weird

      I mostly like Watiti’s stuff, but I have difficulty imagining liking his version of Dredd as much as I liked the 2012 one.

      As much as I’d prefer a Karl Urban sequel…
      I have faith in Waititis abilities to capture the look and feel of 2000AD comics.
      Don’t know about the writer though… haven’t seen anything he’s done
