Disappointing is such a weak comment.

What? That is all you have to say?

Yet another piece of evidence the federal government doesn’t want to solve the housing crisis. The Trudeau-Carney proposal was „let’s encourage cities to build more densely, to encourage more development, let’s give them a carrot to reward their efforts“. So the federal government gave them a carrot. And the positive improvements come when? Toronto allowed the most dense neighbourhoods to build more density. Toronto Centre wasn’t the problem, Scarborough and Etobicoke are.
Of course Ford shouldn’t escape attention. The federal government has to offer a carrot because they legally can’t use a stick. Ford leads the government that can use the stick, but he won’t because he also doesn’t care to solve the housing crisis.
They should pull the money from Toronto.
And Chow should use the strong mayor powers to make this happen regardless of what council thinks and regardless of what the NIMBY electorate thinks and the political risk that would lead to for her in the next election.
The Liberals need to come down hard and fast on Toronto. If you let Toronto nimby councillors get away with blocking sixplexe’s without a response you are signalling to every municipality that the HAF has no teeth.
When your government’s solution to the housing crisis was „we’ll build more“, then you can’t let NIMBYs get away with halting developments. The housing minister says „oh boo, this sucks“ without announcing any punitive action towards Toronto in retaliation.
And no straight answer. This is like the empty talking points under Trudeau.
No one wants to lead and it’s frustrating AF.
Even though there aren’t really any actions to be concerned with yet, Gregor isn’t doing the best job at politics right now. At least to people under a certain age, maybe the boomers are liking his softer language on housing.
It seems like an easy political win win. Come out forcefully, show you’re serious about this program and bringing in desperately needed reforms. Olivia Chow can say aw shucks guess my hands are tied, and overrule the council and keep the policy to maintain the funding. She doesn’t look like the bad guy in a municipal election, and Gregor looks serious about tackling the housing crisis nationally without worrying about petty NIMBY concerns.
