She met the Labour Party, which is considering supporting her campaign, on Tuesday. But earlier this week party leader Ivana Bacik and other elected representatives were asked by the [Irish-Syria Solidarity Movement ](https://www.irishtimes.com/tags/irish-syria-solidarity-movement/)not to back Ms Connolly’s [campaign.In](http://campaign.In) the email, the group asked the party not to endorse Ms Connolly as it believes she is “not fitted to this role”.

      >Ms Connolly’s visit to Syria alongside three other TDs, at a time when the regime of Bashar al-Assad was still in power, has been the subject of scrutiny since she became publicly linked to a presidential run.

      >The group said it would find it “shocking and deeply disappointing” if Labour backs her. And it argued that the trip “provided legitimacy to the Assad regime and its narrative”.

      >The group also flagged concerns that Ms Connolly launched [former MEP Clare Daly](https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/courts/2025/05/09/former-mep-clare-daly-alleges-defamation-in-article-published-weeks-before-2024-european-elections/)’s bid for re-election to the European Parliament last year. Ms Daly, along with Mick Wallace and Maureen O’Sullivan, were the other TDs to make the trip to Syria.

    2. I imagine that Connolly shouldn’t have much difficulty getting 20 members of the Dail and Senate to back her nomination. If worst comes to worst, she will almost certainly get the four councils needed to back her.

Upset she went to Syria under Assad but they’d be fine with her going to meet new President and former al-Nusra poster boy Jolani, I’m sure 🤝

    4. I was wondering when the Anglo-Irish Times was going to start their smear campaign against the only legitimate candidate from the left. Didn’t expect them to be this early.

    5. I mean a lot of politicians went to Syria over the years long before the civil war. So I’m not sure this argument has weight.

Unless she was a mad supporter of Bashar and was vocal about him staying in power? Otherwise I’d say this is a nothing story.

    6. I don’t get the buzz around her. She’s pretty much just adored by NIMBYs she’s a professional objector to any infrastructure.

I’m actually planning to take a holiday to Syria in 2026. Should I not go if I have intentions of running for the Irish presidency in the future?
