They are very partisan. Only going after Pierre, it’s obvious.
1000 signatures to be on the ballot would be bad for democracy. It would be very hard to add hustling to get signatures to get on a ballot as a prerequisite for independent candidates especially and for new parties.
Even for parties like the Greens who are established having to get 1000 signatures per riding to get on the ballot would be a huge amount of work across all ridings.
I think this would result in worse ballot options for Canadians to vote for and put a huge burden on smaller/parties and independents to overcome.
Poilievre’s reaction to the protest’s message of the need for electoral reform is to further advantage and entrench the big parties.
This isn’t a Poilievre specific criticism.
The non-partisan head of Elections Canada has said the same thing, and said this group is making a mockery of the democratic process. He has rules already proposed and presented to Parliament, to crack down on these groups, but they weren’t able to be passed in time for the last election.
In the federal election held in April, the Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Green candidates combined for 98.72% of the vote, an *increase* from the same four parties‘ 97.6% vote share in the same riding in 2021.
The 1.28% won by other candidates in 2025 represented a combined total of 1,099 votes.
Pierre Poilievre lost by 4,513 votes, 5.25% behind Bruce Fanjoy.

Pierre is already cooking up excuses for under-performing in his do-over election.
Whatever it takes to end the horsecrap that is FPTP.
This probably won’t do it but it’s pushing in the right direction.
I’ll never forgive Trudeau for squandering the only chance we’re going to have for a generation or two to get rid of FPTP. That was his greatest sin IMHO.
The message was sent loud and clear to Justin that Canadians aren’t interested in changing the system which is why he dropped it like a hot potato. Along comes this group who thinks it is OK to disrupt the process because they don’t like it. What’s next?

The longest ballot doesn’t accomplish anything and the way they are targeting one guy is going to eventually turn on them. Fine line between making a political point an bullying.
Imo a conservative in that riding is willing to run independent and oppose him. This energy should be funneled in to support her and not this meme/troll farce.
The system is sorting itself. The conservatives there aren’t unanimously happy about this. Don’t muddy the waters and let this sort itself out. People like Bonnie Critchley are signs that the conservative movement can right itself. Let’s give it a chance.

We don’t allow political activism to take place near a polling place. We shouldn’t allow it to take place on the literal ballot, either.
I love how conservatives are up in arms over this. It’s basically stating their supporters can’t read more than a couple names.
Personally I think the Longest Ballot committee should have found a dozen people named Pierre
I don’t think the longest ballot committee realizes that as soon as we get proportional representation a real right wing party would form and most likely gain a lot of ground after a few election cycles. I’m all for it but based on the ridings they’re targeting I don’t think they’d like the outcome.
There’s no legit reason to increase restrictions to become a candidate. A mild inconvenience is fine in a democracy. Even if one disagrees with their point of view it should be accepted within reason. I mean Ottawa had to put up with a long trucker protest but suddenly a few pages for a ballot is horrific? Sorry but allowing peaceful protests is vital for democracy. Even if it’s on the ballot. If we start restricting democracy because some protest was inconvenient to some then we are on the road to losing our democracy.
If anything we should make it easy to become a candidate. Anyone should be able to run if they wish to. Doesn’t mean they’ll win. But it should be very accessible. I don’t want it to only be available to the well known, popular or rich.
