I don’t think that Carney is dumb enough to reduce the number of diplomats, he will likely select more to advance our economic and security interests around the world.
The cuts will likely include many of Trudeau’s pet Dei projects.
Hot take: we need to dramatically expand Canada’s diplomatic service and really re-think the way we do diplomacy.
We live in an increasingly multi-polar world system, where new rising powers (China, India, Russia, Brazil, etc.) are increasingly effective at challenging the US-led system we have known since the end of WW2 and since the end of the Cold War.
We can either pretend this is not happening, and continue to allow the US to run our foreign policy (at that point, we might as well become officially the 51st state), or we can recognize and seek opportunities in the great shift of global power that is happening in front of us.
