It’ll all be normalized in short order. Trump is the master of flooding the zone with new outrages daily, making it impossible for most to remember what he did last week. Only when someone they know disappears will people remember it’s still happening. As some point, to meet those high quotes, ICE (no longer limited to the roles of its initials) will begin disappearing people Trump calls „[enemies from within](https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-enemies-from-within-5c4a34776469a55e71d3ba4d4e68cf62)“ (ie anyone that doesn’t bend the knee or kiss the Orange mushroom).

For those of you who just aren’t getting it: The United States has deployed the military tactics we used to round up „insurgents“ Iraq in cities across the nation.
How did we know if someone in Iraq was an insurgent? An insurgent resisted.

Every German who lived through the 1930s, and then subsequently lived through the war, would say afterwards, „we were free until we realized we weren’t anymore, but then it was too late.“

Several years ago, my two brothers and I got together for the first time in nearly 30 years, largely due to my older brother and I being incarcerated in different states for overlapping periods of time; and my oldest brother, who spent the years in the U.S. Navy, was at odds with how our brother and I ended up being so politically different than him, a Republican (not MAGA… at the time). We were inherently against Trump, who our oldest was defending, claiming him better for the country than the Democrats. We both knew better; we know what a police state feels like, and what Trump was wanting back then (2019) was clear to us. When Trump had protesters attacked for his dumb photo-op, I sent my brother a text to ask him about those „guardrails“ again. Crickets. Jan. 6th? Nothing. We haven’t talked in years…

The US has had one of the world’s highest incarceration rates for decades. There are a lot of great things about the United States, but the near complete unwillingness for real introspection about the things that aren’t great has played a large role in how the country arrived in the current political situation. For a long time the „US exceptionalism“ and „America #1“ tribalism has allowed the political and social needle to be moved without enough resistance. Trump has pushed the extreme this far and the veneer is finally coming off, but it’s been a police state at the core for a while now. The real scary part is the amount of people that will acknowledge the veneer coming off, and just don’t care.

We incarcerate a larger percentage of our nation than almost any other other ‚first world‘ country.

>With most detainees only weeks or months from deportation, that means millions of new migrants cycling through.
Assuming there’s independent investigators that verify that people were deported, actually made it to their home country without being pushed out of an airplane?
Can anyone tell me what the criteria is for being deported to some random country unrelated to the deportees?
When a someone is shipped to an unrelated foreign country, what happens to them? Are they imprisoned or murdered or enslaved or what?

The US has always been a police state for anyone who wasn’t a privileged cis het white man. This is evidenced how every civil right had to be fought for with literal blood-in-the-streets violence. This includes the abolition of slavery, worker’s rights, women’s rights, the civil rights movement of the 60s, the queer rights movements of the 70s & 90s, & the 2020 BLM movement. And even with all of that, none of them were absolute victories but, rather, riddled with concessions & compromises. Non-white folks are still facing discrimination & harassment, queer folks are still struggling for recognition & rights, women have to fight for bodily autonomy, workers are seeing worse & worse conditions with fewer protections, & that’s not even addressing the 2nd class citizenship of disabled folks.
The US has always been friendlier towards preserving right-wing authoritarianism than looking after the well being of the populace.
