It’s very funny to me that so many western countries, including Canada, hold artists and musicians to a higher ethical and moral standard than politicians currently orchestrating a genocide. Multiple members of the Israeli government have entered Canada and have even gone so far as to advertise land sales in Gaza to potential buyers in Canada since 2023 and there’s never been any question about that. But someone who says „we should be against genocide and actively work to stop it“ at a music festival in a completely different country is subject to sanctions and bans?
This country has committed countless genocides in the past against indigenous people, we were complicit in the Holocaust by rejecting Jewish refugees trying to flee to Canada and sending them back to the death camps, and we didn’t interfere in Rwanda, or in Indonesia, or in any genocide that’s happened since the Holocaust. We’re just repeating the same historical mistakes with Palestine, and the leaders and people who continue to support it will continue to be looked down upon by history as resoundingly being on the wrong side of history.
As I posted previously, the annoying thing about being principled about freedom of speech is that you have to put up with people you don’t like. I find these kind of „anti-colonial“ leftists who reflexively support terrorists that would kill them in a heartbeat to be incredibly dumb. But the free speech protections that shelter them also shelter me. I don’t want Canada to go down the path of the UK where we make so much speech illegal, that it then becomes a situation where it is at the caprice of law enforcement or the government to pick and choose when to prosecute people.
Also it goes without saying that you could do nothing better to raise the profile of the group in this country than to have the government cancel their shows.
