      > …the Federal Trade Commission last year finalized a “click to cancel” rule, requiring that it be as easy to cancel a recurrent subscription as it is to sign up.

      > Also unsurprisingly, the rule came under immediate attack from Big Business, via a federal lawsuit filed last year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business lobbies.

      > Possibly most unsurprisingly, a three-judge appeals court panel in St. Louis (two appointed by Trump and one by George H.W. Bush) threw out the rule on Tuesday — less than a week before it was to take effect and after more than five years of painstaking administrative and regulatory work — on a legal technicality.

      > Whether the rule will be resurrected by today’s FTC is unclear; the commission told me by email it’s still “considering our options.” The FTC’s two GOP commissioners — including Andrew Ferguson, who was elevated to the chairmanship by Donald Trump in January — dissented in the 3-2 vote last year to make the rule final. Ferguson succeeded Biden appointee Lina Khan, who told podcaster Pablo Torre last month that the rule had “enormous support” from the public.

    2. Yeah Trump court took it to the woodshed. It’s almost like Republicans didn’t give two shits about the regular folk. Good thing they vote for them.

    3. Since our government has been bought by businesses, we need to stop using these companies.

    4. >The agency failed to conduct a proper economic impact analysis required when regulations exceed $100 million annually, violating Section 18 of the FTC Act.
      >
      >“While we certainly do not endorse the use of unfair and deceptive practices in negative option marketing, the procedural deficiencies of the Commission’s rulemaking process are fatal here,” the Eighth Circuit ruling stated.

      As Gadget Review said:

      >Think of it as getting kicked out of class for not showing your work, even though your answer was right.

May have been doomed anyway with this administration, but big business won the legal game

Nutrisystem hides any and all information on how to cancel your subscription. You have to google to locate number to call just to request to cancel. When you finally reach a human, they’ll waste 20 minutes of your time trying to convince you not to cancel, even offer you discounts and additional plans. If you tell them you achieved your goals, they’ll try to hook you on another plan.

It really is gross that Republicans and MAGA wants to keep this sort of predatory practice around.

The American people voted for a government that ran on jacking up taxes and killing consumer protections. This is what Trump voters voted for.

    7. When I was young and dumb…er, I got cold called by Girls Gone Wild. It was the strangest call. The dude on the other end of the line was talking about tight asses, and titanic tits. I’d just gotten home from work and my roommates and we were passing around a bong.

It was one of those get a free dvd and you can cancel before the end of the month and not pay anything. I signed up and, possibly because of how much weed we were smoking, completely spaced about calling to cancel. That happened for a few months before I finally called.

I thought the first call was strange, but cancelling Girls Gone Wild was a journey in and of itself. Said I wanted to cancel and the guy on the line offered the ‚premium cancellation package‘ which was four more payments, so a little more than $100, for 10 more dvds.

It took 45 minutes of haggling before he offered one more payment and 4 more DVDs and I was so damn frustrated I just agreed. Click to cancel could have saved me those 40 minutes and $26 plus shipping and handling.

    8. It’s sickening the current pervasiveness of business models built around anticompetitive practices and screwing over customers.

You know how you pay for those services with a credit card. You can cancel that way too

Seems like half the companies in the world business model is people forgetting or not being able to cancel their subscription.

      Frustrating, and frustratingly predictable.

On the other hand, about a week ago I canceled my Apple TV+ subscription (I’ll come back later, I’m sure; I’ve done this before) and it was indeed a one-click process, no nagging, no questions, no fuss. Not every company is terrible about it. Weirdly, I feel way more likely to patronize companies that make it easy to leave. Go figure.

Incredibly disappointing. I had a subscription to a newspaper in a town I moved away from, and I thought the one click rule was in place so I went to cancel. Found out that way that the one click rule was not in place. I had to wait for business hours and then call and wait on hold and deal with people trying to convince me to keep my subscription for 10 minutes before I could cancel
