Why would we fight for a nation and a government that has deserted us? It makes no sense. I am not going to fight and die for a country that wouldn’t lift a finger for me. Personally speaking, of course.
War is disgusting.
If it was a question of sovereignty and a foreign power invading us, I would 100% do it.
If you aren’t willing to defend our land and way of life and values, are you really Canadian?
Fighting in a foreign war 1000s of kms away, not so much.
So, with 22 million people in the proper age range for military service, that’s still around 10.8 million potential volunteers. Obviously 59 year olds would have to retire almost immediately and plenty more wouldn’t be able to enlist due to disability or otherwise not meeting the physical requirements, but I’m betting that still puts the potential (useful) volunteer pool at over 5 million.
Realistically, the only war we’re ever going to fight on Canadian soil is a guerrilla war. It’s going to be Russia or the US, either of which would roll over our military in a matter of days, and our NATO allies would not stand with us against either one.
If we’re going to spend all that money on defence, spend it on a Swiss-style massive reserve force with supply caches hidden everywhere, and infrastructure rigged for sabotage to deny it to the enemy.
Depends on the war. If it was to defend this country or another NATO country from an invasion? Sure I would reenlist. If it was another war to help sooth America’s ego? Then no. I have a cousin who served in Afghanistan, he lost both of his legs over there. He works in a steel factory now and is facing being laid off if the dipshit to the south decides to have another temper tantrum. If this is the sort of thanks Canada gets for having it’s blood spilt for America then fuck them.
Ya we’re so far from the Greatest Generation at this point, instead of volunteering in droves the current generations would rather sit back and complain while Canada is lost to a foreign adversary. The entitlement is ludicrous while willingness to actually do something is near nothing.
