Time to build our own country. We had a taste of being the wealthiest middle class in the world. We could be that again.
I’m surprised at the word « still ». Nothing has improved! Why would attitudes suddenly be all puppies and sunshine.
Well, yeah.
Have things fundamentally changed since February? They haven’t. Their president is using the country to dump and pump the stock market over and over, and he shows no signs of stopping.
His on-again off-again tariffs are barely newsworthy anymore because it’s become clear that nothing he says can be counted on for more than a few hours.
How would you feel if that were your closest neighbour and trading partner?

Slightly decreased pessimism + anger. Slightly increased disinterest and optimism. I find that interesting because, like, what are they optimistic about? The survey was done after the digital service tax was dropped and before Trump announced tariffs yet again, so maybe those who felt optimistic were just hoping that it meant we’d reach a trade deal and the tariff bullshit was over, but it seems clear that wasn’t the case.
The 5% satisfied/happy are of course insane, but there’s always some percentage like that. Lizardman’s constant plus wanna be Americans.
The rise in disinterest is interesting. I wonder if it comes from the fact that we keep seeing Trump chicken out („TACO“, as they’re calling it)? Certainly everything related to Trump is exhausting and he’s constantly flip-flopping, so I can’t entirely blame those who say they’re disinterested. Plus there’s a desire to move on from the US and build up trade with the rest of the world, which could be seen as having disinterest towards the yanks.
Personally, I’d put myself in the anger camp. Mostly I’m angry that Americans have done so little to stand up to Trump and the GOP, as well as the baffling level of support they have. If it were just Trump, it’d be one thing. But the GOP house and senate seem happy to enable Trump (such as with them passing their lunatic „big beautiful bill“, which even sounds gross). My understanding is that Congress can also stop this tariff stupidity at any time. The fact that they haven’t and the fact that the American people haven’t pushed harder for it is why I’m angry at them. I’m also pretty pessimistic, as I’m not sure what future there is for our relationship with the US and I fear for vulnerable Americans (especially LGBT and non-white folks), but anger is definitely the dominant emotion.
(As an aside, the article mentions a few breakdowns like Quebec and some age groups. But I can’t find the actual source.
