It’s not even clear what this is about? He talks about fentanyl, which is a non issue, then random things, dairy supply management I guess? But then back to fentanyl. How do you negotiate with this?

Who is the biggest loser of all these tariffs right now? The United States itself!
Other countries are now reorganizing themselves and lowering their dependency on the US (yes, it hurts but it doesn’t destabilize them politically. If anything, it’s solidifying them) while the US is left with more expensive products, less revenues from tourism, financial debts to other countries (e.g. Japan and China) and now with the whole world knowing that the US‘ word has no value.
They wanted to „Make America Great Again“ but now made the US a pariah.
So what, we knew he would do this. We need to apply reciprocal tariffs and otherwise ignore the US. Buy anything but USA. Avoid travel to the US. Decouple from the US on all fronts and expand to other markets. It may be a bit painful for a while but we need to do it. Screw the US.
I think it was genuinely worth trying to negotiate *something* with the US given how bad a major trade war will be for Canadians.
But this is always where I thought things would end up, sooner or later. Can’t trust a thing Trump says; it could all change radically the next day. He has no impulse control and he’s obsessed with tariffs.
Time for this government to give up on the idea of a deal.
What is this about now? I don’t want to go on Truth Social to find out ~~what~~ how he attempted to justify this.
Regardless, I am so tired of America and the dementia patient that is their president. You can’t negotiate with him; he is mentally ill and cognitively impaired by his old age. Moreover, it’s appears like he will never held accountable for his lunacy or batshit insane international relations by the American public. We just have to hope that insane asylum of a country doesn’t vote in another unhinged wannabe fascist. I don’t like those chances at this point.
Trump is burning down what the U.S spent over a century building, and for what? So America can try and compete in manufacturing in 2025 with China and other Southeast Asian countries with far lower labour costs and far more capital infrastructure? The plan is batshit insane through and through. America will be a pile of ruble by the time he’s done with at this rate if he gets what he wants. Let’s get off that burning, sinking ship before it’s too late.

If you are going to impose tariffs we can work with that. If your going to negotiate a new deal we can work with that… but when you just say shit then backtrack…. then side step then say they will… err wait no won’t be…. there is no point in expending effort dealing with you when we can do a deal somewhere else. Sure that deal may involve more shipping and may not be as convenient as (the old) deal with our land neighbour but it is still better than the non-deal that even if signed will be torn up a month later.
Just because. He can’t be trusted for anything and any agreement made will not be worth the paper it’s written on.
Are USMCA goods still exempt from this? Does Trump even know? Does it matter if this inevitably changes a dozen more times before August 1st?
So he got bored of picking on Japan and Bosnia and now he’s back to Canada? At least we didn’t get the copy paste letter, but his demands still make no sense. I guess he’ll probably back down, but it’s not great having a crazy person with so much control of our economy. But we can’t change geography, it’s a difficult situation
It’s time to announce that, effective immediately, we will be banning all exports of potash and oil from Canada into the US until Trump immediately revokes this threat.
I thought scrapping the DST as a way to get the ball rolling on a productive negotiation was an acceptable sacrifice.
