I am not an expert, but it looks like there were some sort of a wood-eating pest in there (maybe carpenter bees?). It looks like a tunnel was bored inside of the wood. Are woodpeckers native to the area? They may have done the final damage looking for lunch. Hard to say though. Might wanna have a pest control inspection to be safe.

    2. It was a woodpecker, but only because the insects bore out the tunnel first and the woodpecker could hear them. Typically carpenter bee larvae or carpenter ants.

    3. Two critters. Carpenter bees dug the tunnels and a woodpecker heard them chewing and decided to dig them out.
