Surely just extending the tram network would be better, seems like a bit of a waste of money and it’s not even that far walking from end to end!
Effing ridiculous idea that would just suck up all the money that is needed for other transport infrastructure in the North of England.
All bar one of the existing tram routes run through Cornbrook-Deansgate-St Peters Square. It’s a horrendous pinch point that prevents true expansion of the network.
An underground system is long overdue.

Amazing, all we need is a few million to design a logo, hire some nice hotels for big meetings, get some consultants in, and then forget all about it once the funding drys up.
This is an idea that resurfaces every 10 years or so. Totally unfeasible, it’s never got anywhere in the past and won’t in the future – far too expensive.
Manchester doesn’t need an underground… They need to fix platforms 13 and 14 at Piccadilly with the cancelled 15 and 16 from the „Northern powerhouse“ smoke and mirrors the Tories pedalled years ago.
Pretty much all rail flow through Manchester to link to Liverpool, Lancaster, Scotland, the Lake District, or just Manchester Airport (huge amount of passengers) is crammed through just two platforms that literally ALWAYS have a signal fault or a broken down train or a police incident or a medical emergency…. and it gridlocks the whole lot.
Absolute travesty in its current state. Those two key platforms are barely hanging on to functionality whilst handling most of the rail passengers in and out of the city.
Focus on the damn priorities and get things moving again… Manchester’s internal public transport network is already pretty damn good. Linking northern cities in a functional manner makes actual difference.

surely, they will need a 200 million pound rat tunnel somewhere in this project?
I’d like to consult on a feasibility study for such a rat tunnel.
oh look, a city with a good public transport wants an even better public transport.. all while Leeds is rotting with shitty busses and that’s it
Sounds fantastic, I don’t live in Manchester but this is the kind of thing that really revolutionises daily life and I hope it comes through.
Given the UK’s ability to construct things this will be complete in 2100 and will cost 500 billion
We have had this crop up every few years in Birmingham and every time it comes back as great idea but ultimately unaffordable and it delays other far more deliverable infrastructure projects especially when you have to go cap in hand to the government for funding. I’m not optimistic but good luck to them
It really needs it. Other european countries like germany have several cities with underground systems. Plenty of then being smaller than Manchester.
Manchester needs underground links at least Pic to Vic but it won’t happen in the next 25yrs at least. A) it’s better to spend money for manchester on expanding metrolink. However, if they do end up building the new Liverpool to Manchester line, that will need to go underground to pic to be usable so the tunnelling fever will be there I guess
Sure. obviously it won’t happen in the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean we should stop asking for one. I don’t think a lot of people appreciate the importance of ambition and assertiveness, and not forgetting reality.
Reality = it is utterly preposterous that a first-world city the size of Manchester does not have a metro (a real one) and it is due to decades of prejudice and misgovernance. The fact that the preposterousness continues, with no sign of end, does not stop it being preposterous.
Yes, I’m a Manc and you probably see me as having a chip on my shoulder. But I’ve lived in Germany, in Austria, in France where cities a fraction the size of Manchester have decent public transport. I will not be gaslit on this.
It’s why I really rate Andy B (even though I’m not Labour). He has a clear-eye view of the truth.
